So, what do you tink?

I think it's good to reduce our dependance on oil/gas, especially Rusian oil/gas.

Approval Expected for Wind Farms

Depends upon how chartership is viewed within your industry. For a chemical engineer, a chartership bestows the title of CEng MIChemE, which not only looks good on business cards, but is also a key to many jobs here and abroad. It was important for me to become chartered to prove my professionalism and gain respect. I must add that at the moment it has done nothing for my salary, but that is my choice as I prefer to work parttime at the moment. CEng does put you in a different league when applying for jobs.

Oh, I do approve of windfarms on the whole by the way, even though I am harping on about engineering.

whatwouldjesusdo · 21/12/2006 21:43

hmm thats interesting. Ive never been aware of the need to have anything but the latest technology on my CV, but will bear it in mind. Trouble is, in my area, there are people with mbas, phds, but at the end of the day, all that counts is if they deliver a solution on time.

I think we should also remember that any large scale engineering project whether it is a wind farm, a nuclear plant, or a railroad involves a lot more team members that just the engineers. You have peopls in cost, you have planners, you have the construction, you have a management team (who may or may not be engineers). There are many reason a project can fail, and it is not always (probably not usually) down to the engineering capabilities.

I know that as a mechanical engineer in the oil business (design/construction of offshore platforms) I sometimes was not able to spec the piece of equipment I actually wanted on the platform because the buyer squashed my technical recommendation because of the higher price.

I have since left enginnering fot IT because careers in engineering can be rather unstable in the West. This is because it is cheaper to get things engineered in places like Korea. It is more often than not about profitability, not quality engineering.

Here is some more information about the London Array

Janet Street-Porter was writing about it in The Independent yesterday. She is unhappy about the new substation being sited at Cleve Hill - on the edge of Gravney Marsh (a nature reserve).

'Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds'

Uwila, I love that quote. I will recite it to myself whenever DomCon starts pontificating in future.

Fio, have you been for a lie down? do you feel better now dear?

My dh is an engineer and the most intelligent man I have ever known. It is a highly skilled job, and he spent 6 yrs at university to earn his qualifications.

He will be very pleased to hear about the wind farms as renewable energy sources are a special interest of his (one of his research projects was involving something to do with the mountings of wind turbines - pages upon pages of calculations!)

It is true that engineers are not understood or appreciated in this country, which is shocking. My dh is going to Uganda to develop water supply and waste systems over there, which is of course something a highly important aspect of public health.
