train strikes??

Got ourselves into a tangle. We're going away for bank holiday by train, all booked, very dependent on them running properly, but in total emergency there's always car. HOWEVER Nanny asked if she could have car while we're away, we said OK, she's booked herself hotel, etc. etc., will be out of pocket if has to cancel (not to mention furious, upset, etc.).

Last I heard the ballot result wasn't due till Monday (24th), so with 7 days' notice (as per law) strike can't start till, would it be Monday 31st? or June 1st? can never work out whether it's "clear days".

So (a) does anyone have better info re whether there really will be strikes & if so when? and (b) who's got the better right to the car??? (I think our nanny does, dh begs to differ.)

I think there has to be a minimum of 7 days - but it doesn't actually have to be 7 days. And for maximum impact they'll be wanting to strike on a working day, not a public holiday when it hits people rather than business and the economy (not to mention the rail operating co's who make most of their their money from business not leisure travel). They've got nothing to gain by striking on a holiday and antagonising the general public, so I'd bet that they wouldn't choose the holiday weekend to strike anyway.

Thanks, LunarSea - very sensible. Any other views/info?

Separately, think we've also screwed up by arranging to be away one more day than we told her - she hates holiday being forced on her and will probably quit now. aaargh

it depends on who has the kids if the nanny has them then i say her but if you have them then have to agree with your dh and say you
