She was only 24 so they must be very young. What an awful thing to grow up with

AllieAndTheIvy · 12/12/2006 21:30

and v scary. only half an hour up the road from me

cece · 12/12/2006 21:30

Have spoken to my MIL tonight she says it is very frightening, with loads of helicoptors about. She knew some of the girls too.

southeastastra · 12/12/2006 21:34

it's so awful. take care people around the area.

2nervesnapartridgeinapeartree · 12/12/2006 21:35

Hope the headline is mother of 3 found dead not prostitute found dead.

handlemecarefully · 12/12/2006 21:40
Sad
vitomum · 12/12/2006 21:41

agree 2nerves. I think it is so sad for those young women that they will now be forever labelled 'prostitute'.

persephonesnape · 12/12/2006 21:42

thats such a horrific thing to happen. poor kids. poor mum. seriously hope they find whoever did this quickly.

paulaplumpbottom · 12/12/2006 21:42

Poor Kids, how will anyone explain this to them? I hope they find this guy.

surprise · 12/12/2006 22:30

one thing that really gets me is that one of the girls they found today was interviewed on the local news a few nights ago. she was saying that she was still going to go out as she needed the money. . she sounded as though she probably had a drug habit to pay for. poor, poor girls. It's so terrible that they have to resort to prostitution just to survive. my heart goes out to their children, and their parents.

DelGirlsRingAreYouListening · 12/12/2006 22:32

dreaful. Those poor girls and their family's

BuffysMum · 12/12/2006 22:41

for all of them & thier families it makes me that label prostitute is mentioned straight away like it makes a difference.

QuadropheniaonIce · 12/12/2006 22:46

I'm guessing the reason the word 'prostitute' is being highlighted so much is because it is the common link atm, not because it makes any of these women less of a person.

IWhoooooshYouamerryXmas · 12/12/2006 22:48

It is awful-for all the families.

This girl aged 24 had her children taken from her though, some time ago apparently so maybe they are in a safe and loving environement with people who can help them through this.

MariNativityPlay · 12/12/2006 22:54

Their work is what put them in danger from this wicked person, so I guess it is relevant. It's all in how much emphasis the press coverage gives it though, I agree. I must be one of the few Mners (waves to Janh) who can remember the tone of the newspaper reports when Peter Sutcliffe killed a student instead of a prostitute
Feel so sad for all of the victims and their families. I hope they catch him soon.

hester · 12/12/2006 23:26

I certainly remember those days, Marina - it was all how dreadful it was now the Ripper had moved on to INNOCENT girls. As though killing a woman who works the streets is a lesser crime.

mummyto2littleprincess · 13/12/2006 00:32

its very evil i just hope the catch the killer
i live in ipswich and dont like to go out when dark alone
ipswich was a quiet town but in the last 10 days theres been 6 people killed
the 5 woman and a man was shot dead outside a nightclub on 8th dec

ipanemagirl · 13/12/2006 01:21

I agree Buffy'smum, I actually phoned to complain today to suffolk police that the spokesman had referred to the women as 'girls' and then 'working girls'. I said it might be more dignified to call them women more often than 'prostitute'. It's true that it if it had been this many 'non-sex working' women there would be a different atmosphere around the reporting.

So sad and I can't imagine what their families must be going through. I feel for people in Ipswich and hope they find the person soon.

BudaBauble · 13/12/2006 06:32

I suppose from the polices's point of view re-iterating that fact that is is prostitutes being killed may keep some of them off the streets. Did see a news report that said the red-light areas were quieter than normal.

You would also think that "regular" (can't think of another word) clients/punters would stay away as well with so much police presence.

Hope they find the monster.

ThrockenAroundTheChristmasTree · 13/12/2006 08:07

I think the point is they are being targeted because they are prosititutes - they are easy targets - easily identifiable - and presumably for the killer - justifiable in some way.

By emphasising that it is a specific group of people being targetted maybe it reduces the mass hysteria that would occur if it was just 5 random murders.

No-one objects in other cases where say pensioners are the "victim group".

It is an awful situation - but at least the reporting in this way means that those who are not "working the streets" should feel relatively safe, and those that do are aware that it is even more dangerous than normal at the moment.

They must be terrified - out of the reported 30 regulars - 5 are now dead - 1 in 6 of them.

JARMgotstuckupthechimney · 13/12/2006 08:13

Havent slept very well for thinking about this.

Its all a little too close to home.

I for one wont be going out in Ipswich AT ALL now. I have even postponned my anniversary meal on 20th december, I would jsut rather stay home where I know I am safe.

Some of these girls are the same age as me, one of them for sure was in my year at school. Makes me sad to know that one girl out of my year had been murdered.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 13/12/2006 08:14

Awful awful interview on Radio 4 this morning of the dad of the woman with 3 kids that was murdered. The first he knew she was living that life was from reporters.

Normally I have respect for the interviewers on Radio 4 but I didn't feel they interviewed him very sensitively at all (although I confess to raising my eyebrow when he mentioned in one breath how much he cared for her and didn't realise what she'd got herself into and then in the next said he hadn't seen her for years...)
