Jeremy Corbyn's Labour win Oldham byelection increasing vote share to a massive 62.27% Watch the media report it as a 'reduced majority' to try to make it look negative!

The Labour Party have just won the Oldham byelection with a hugely increased vote share, although total votes were down due to a lower turnout which is normal for a byelection.

The mainstream media just cannot bear to report anything about Mr Corbyn positively so it will bound to be reported as a 'reduced majority.'

Ask yourself why they might need to do this!?

Both true.

But the truth can be used to manipulate people.

Indeed they are. It really is fascinating reading and listening to all the different reports today and teasing out the spin and propaganda.

That Radio 4 show sounds good, must give it a listen, thanks! Smile

You are assuming the scriptwriter on FiveLive or whATEVER knows what they are talking about!

It was a live broadcast, no script. However, if you listened there was a definite and undeniable agenda, they were at first saying it could be a shock win for UKIP, then they said the Labour win may just by under 1000 votes and interspersing all that with 'banter' that this could be the end of Corbyn's leadership and any other attempt they could think of to undermine him.

The only ways you could forgive or understand their stupidity would be to think that they believe everything that they read in newspapers and see on the television.

Failing that, you could surmise they are just truly thick I suppose (but really, that is the same conclusion as above)

All other ways of explaining it are unpleasant to say the least

When the prediction came through that Labour had won by a massive majority you could hear the extreme discomfort of the presenters before they started to deflect and spin again.......ending with, 'so now I suppose onto the next problem for Labour,' after the result.

It was in turns highly infuriating, exhilarating, and also somewhat darkly worrying to listen too.

Would normally expect an opposition party at this stage of a Parliament to get convincing wins in by-elections.

I think there was a Corbyn effect. Many Labour activists reported hearing it on the doorstep. However, it was likely exaggerated in the speculation leading up to the vote because of other problems - and polls - facing Corbyn nationally.

There is also the Farage effect which no-one has mentioned. The vote was seen as a Labour/UKIP choice. Oldham has a large working class and immigrant population so were unlikely to go for a Party led by a posh anti-immigration campaigner! Labour wisely played up the well-known local candidate and played down Corbyn. Farage was all over the area.

Labour ran a better, more appropriate campaign and deservedly won. whether this means Corbyn is electable nationally I still doubt.

Spoken like a politician (of any party) who is in Government

Err, I'm a member of the Labour Party! Wasn't trying to diminish our win. Just saying this kind of result is not out of the ordinary.

I agree that the national problems had led many commentators to expect Labour's share to be drastically reduced or even that they would lose - but that was always unlikely. I was surprised the share was slightly up; I expected it to go down a bit.

Labour have held the seat for almost 50 years to chuck that in to the mix. I live in a key marginal which always makes it a bit more exciting.

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 04/12/2015 11:18

Ego you are right, they must have a manual!

As regards the statistics, The Guardian says succinctly: McMahon’s majority was 10, 722, down from 14,783 recorded by the late Michael Meacher at the general election in May. But Labour’s share was up 7.5% to to 62.3%, because fewer people voted overall.

It can't be that hard to explain! The rest of the article is pretty fair too.

Reading the reports yesterday, they said that Labour was going to win but with a much reduced majority, and this would bring Corbyn's leadership into question. You wake up this morning, and there is a comfortable majority for Labour. Hmm, did the pollsters/media learn nothing from the General Election, for which they predicted the result spectacularly wrong?

Glad to hear The Guardian article was fair today.

Try this Guardian semi video report from yesterday, right to the end and see what you think.....

The video report ends with the statement that for Labour it's a 'story of everything falling apart'. With a 10,000 majority on a miserable and wet December day, I don't think so. (I don't vote Labour, btw, I am just fed up with the biased reporting.)

anonooo · 04/12/2015 13:10

the media in the UK is just ridiculous - horrible idiots.l At least the public is not so stupid as to take them seriously. They should be censured for their bias. Wonder if the Glasgow Media Group are onto them.

squidzin · 04/12/2015 15:22

Ego, you make very good points.

The analysis of the media bias needs to be brought into the curriculum with almost an urgency!

However, (unfortunately) the curriculum is centralised. At the moment it's centralised to a Tory party, who have recently removed feminism and women from politics and other absurd decisions.
The Tories depend on media bias.

A democratic socialist such as Corbyn would be the only sort of politician to allow actual educators to define education. Until then, education is in the hands of manipulators. (Such as Gove or Morgan).

squidzin · 04/12/2015 15:25

The BBC should be dissolved. Fucking TV licence fee to be fed propaganda!?
Establishment fuck buddies demanding to take money from me to persuade me how to think to their own agenda!?
No thankuu.

squidzin · 04/12/2015 15:32

The unfairersex
I've given up on the Guardian since they were taken over by a buch of tax dodging ex-bankers etc.

Their focus has become Click-Bait Faux-left (centrist/pro-business).

Every article reporting Corbyn has a sting in it's tail. When you think it's a positive report they always slip in "unelectable" or "protest politician" somewhere. Every time.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 04/12/2015 16:50

anonooo thanks for the Glasgow Media Group link. It was really interesting.

batshitlady · 04/12/2015 18:33

“treason” and “Labour sympathising” I heard. The voters though it seems, don't seem to be listening.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 05/12/2015 19:22

Re media, there is talk of philosophy being taught in primary schools, which would be one way to go. Yay Plato. www.theguardian.com/education/2015/jul/10/philosophy-for-children-pupils-maths-literacy
Can recommend Nick Davies 'Flat Earth News', and of course anything by Ben Goldacre (www.badscience.net/) though he tends to stick with medicine primarily. Books that should be on everyone's shelves.

NoTechnologicalBreakdown · 05/12/2015 19:24

And yes, I'm seriously grieving for what's happened to our Aunty Beeb over the last few years. Wouldn't dissolve it, I want it back the way it was.
