Not sure if anyone has posted about this latest news re Baby carseats and cot death but I think it would be worth posting again anyway.

have to say I've always worried about babes sleeping in car seats for any length of time as they do seem to be very warm when you finally take them out but what do you do when on a car journey of say 40 mins and they fall asleep almost as soon as you set off.

if ds was asleep and I really didn't want to wake him, I used to prop the foot end of the car seat up on something so that he was sort of laying on his back but in the car seat.

Scary

I never used the car safety seat as a sleeping place, outside of the car and DD was rarely in her infant carrier outside of the car at all. It doesn't look very comfortable to start with.

I always removed DD's outer clothes before placing in her the car seat. She still removes her coat, etc now before fastening up. Firstly she got/gets too hot trussed up in outdoor clothes in hercar seat, espeically if the heater is on. Secondly, I read that having big bulky padded coats, etc means that the seat velt fasteners aren't fitted snugly enough to offer full protection in case of a crash.

I'm another one that always removed coats or simply didn't put them on if ds was going straight in the car seat. The heater in the car is enough to keep us warm although he does have a hat and gloves on in winter but no coat until we get out of the car.

I too used to remove coats etc. Even now we still do and I have a couple of blankets in the back they can use if they get cold.

Another tip I recently found out is if you have older children and you use a high bck booster seat that utilises the adult belt, you are supposed to do the belt up when the child isn't using it so that it won't fly around the car if you where in an accident.

Knittingtinsel, I don't think the concern is about when the baby is travelling in the car, it's when the baby is in a seat at home.

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer - I do that too; fasten the car seats in when not in use.

Gosh, mine used to sleep in the car seat all the time when we were at other people's houses, say for the afternoon or something. THey often fell asleep on the journey and stayed asleep for a while after we got there.

My friend's little girl would only ever sleep in her car seat, in the kitchen with the extractor fan going!!

Glitterygookwithchocsonthetree · 08/12/2006 13:24

And what about those travel systems where you just click the baby seat onto the chassis?

I must admit - it is horrible when you see their heads flopping forwards. I used tip mine back a bit in the car so they had their head back rather than forward.

I had DS1 in NZ 4.5 years ago and they were very big on not leaving babies in car seats for more than a couple of hours then - even when travelling you were told to take regular breaks and get the baby out.

GlitteryGook, I was just thinking that about the travel systems. I've never liked them because the baby can end up spending far too long in them if you go out shopping for the day or something. I always had a proper pram or lie-flat buggy for mine as although it was a pain getting them out of the car and risking waking them up, at least they got a chance to lie flat for a while, and had air circulating around them in hot weather. A real pet hate of mine is seeing people with travel systems putting both hoods up (the seat and the buggy) instead of using a sunshade or parasol. I always think it must be like a little oven in there!
