Drunk MP's hectoring Jeremy Corbyn in House Of Commons?

I was watching an old episode of Loose Women the other day and they were saying there are eight bars in the houses of parliament and quite often some MP's are so drunk they don't know what they are voting for.

That got me thinking. I showed my friend Prime Ministers questions from 28th October (she had never watched it before, you can find it here starts at 1m 08 secs.)

She was disgusted and said a lot of the MP's looked and sounded drunk and if they are voting on things like sending our servicemen to war and other serious stuff they should be breath tested.

Does anyone else think they should be breath tested before they debate or vote? And is it reasonable to have eight bars in your place of work?

Who else do you know that can go to work drunk and get away with it?

I, like Carol Vorderman, certainly thought they should be breathalysed, so I started a petition on UK Parliament which you can sign here if you agree

'and the drinks are super cheap for London too'

I'm glad you enjoyed the people's hospitality.

I'm a taxpayer too! And I agree with Tindel. The vast majority of MPs are bloody hardworking, and the bars are open to staff too who are often not very well paid.

Now I know you are on a windup.

Nope. To be fair Claig, unless you too have worked in Westminster then how would you really know?

Most of the subsidised cost is them being staffed full time. here are opening times and access rules.

Very few MPs are drunk at PMQs, they just behave that way by tradition.

'Very few MPs are drunk at PMQs'

Then how do they manage to get through it?

"Budget 2011: the Chancellors who drank during the Budget speech

Chancellors are allowed to drink alcohol during their Budget speech - no other Member of Parliament is allowed to do this. Here are some of the tipples enjoyed by Chancellors during their big speech."

William Gladstone (Chancellor: 1853-1855, 1859-1866, 1873-1874, and 1880-1882)

Drank sherry and a beaten egg during his four-hour Budget speech in 1853"

www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/budget/8381914/Budget-2011-the-Chancellors-who-drank-during-the-Budget-speech.html

I don't mind this because it is tradition. I don't like the tradition of the 650 "working hard" to dot the i's and cross the t's on their expense forms for their moats courtesy of the people's hospitality, but the Chancellor tradition is fine. But are you seriously suggesting that during a 4 hour budget speech some members did not curse and down a Bloody Mary or two and to hell with the rules. They are honourable gentlemen but not that honourable. Why do think the Speaker keeps bending down under the view of the cameras? Could you sit through that without a stiff drink?

Tindel · 17/11/2015 17:10

I have sat through 4 hour meetings and seminars and I manage not to run off for a drink Wink

PMQs is only a small part of Parliamentary life and unrepresentative of most of MPs work. It used to be a good way to hold the PM to account, but is now a point scoring shouting match. Haven't seen the last few due to maternity leave, but hope Corbyn's new approach takes some of that out of it

'I have sat through 4 hour meetings and seminars and I manage not to run off for a drink'

But how many attendees sat through 4 hours before consulting their House of Commons subsidised maps to locate the nearest subsidised bar with the shortest route to their susidised tipple courtesy of the people's hospitality?

This has gone a bit off topic so I've started a new thread about whether the £3 million subsidy is a good idea.

You can find it here..

Totally unacceptable. You can't trust MP's anyway, and definitely not pissed ones.

claig

'I'm going to stick my neck out and say I've met lots of hardworking dedicated MPs'

Apart from Farage can you name another?

Sorry, Farage tragically failed to join the club.

Tragically?

Hardworking?

Are you even from the UK Claig?

Your knowledge of what goes on here and your use of terminology suggests you may be from far, far away. Perhaps even another planet.

Lets look at a headline from your beloved Daily Mail :

Ukip MEPs are laziest in Europe, missing a third of debates as Cameron warns UK needs politicians who will 'turn up'

Ukip ranked bottom in league table of 76 parties from across the EU
On average its MEPs turned up for just 61.1% of votes over five years
Lib Dems best UK party with more than 3 MEPs, attending 87% of votes
David Cameron says European Parliament elections 'do matter'

Sounds somewhat like Farage and Co in UKIP are the laziest of the lot of them.

Now that, as they say, is tragic!

"Are you even from the UK Claig?"

Absolutely, in the heart of Middle England

'you may be from far, far away. Perhaps even another planet'

Not unless the county of Essex is another planet. Of course, we know it is another planet from the metropolitan elite's bubble, but it is the heart of Middle England full of good, decent folk.

'Ukip MEPs are laziest in Europe'

Conservative spin, hatchet job for the elite who are in panic mode about Donald Trump and the people's revolution.

'Ukip ranked bottom in league table of 76 parties from across the EU'

League table compiled by a teenage whizzkid from Oxbridge working overtime in an elite think tank funded by the public and with a pass to a House of Commons bar where alcohol is supplied at a subsidised rate courtesy of the public

'On average its MEPs turned up for just 61.1% of votes over five years'

Due to motions that needed voting on being pointless

'Lib Dems best UK party with more than 3 MEPs, attending 87% of votes'

Picking up their attendance cheques

'David Cameron says European Parliament elections 'do matter'

As Christine Keeler would have said "he would wouldn't he?"

teenage whizzkid from Oxbridge probably works as a part-time charidee chugger as well, one that receives government grants courtesy of the public of course.

But don't worry, if UKIP ever win or if Donald Trump wins, everything will change for the better.

Report

Never has the phrase "the drinks are on the House" been more apt.

MPs lead their lobbyists and guests to the nearest subsidised bar and ask their guests what they would like. If the drink chosen is not expensive enough, some probably inform their guests that "the drinks are on the House" paid for by the public, the mugs who pay for their moats, their flipped homes and their bath plugs. I bet the laughter is deafening as they talk of creating another new charidee and draw up a draft for a new government grant for all involved.

'Claig did also, briefly, support Corbyn.'

I still would if he offered something real and good. But political correctness will stop him, he will cave in, the Blairites and BBC will stop him.

I will vote for anyone who makes things better for ordinary people and ends the gravy train, the greasers, the lobbyists and the elite's clique of teenage whizzkids.
