BNP election leaflet through our letterbox - ugh!

Just doing a straw poll of Mumsnetters - has anyone else recently received BNP London Assembly/European Parliament election stuff through their letterbox?
I ask because I live in an area of London which has had a lot of problems with racially-motivated assaults and even murders over the past few years, and I am concerned that our neighbourhood is being targetted in this way. Quite apart from being disgusted at the contents, but that's democracy for you I suppose

what does it say, marina?

motherinferior · 13/05/2004 12:43

We haven't, but I'll keep an eye out.

Marina · 13/05/2004 12:46

Oh, they're pretty careful these days about anything blatantly racist, but the policy on asylum seekers is to send them all back and refuse to take any more in - for example.
But the rest of it was a very clever call to reinstate law and order, support our beleaguered teachers and police, make the streets safe again etc, and I worry that people may vote for the BNP without realising their racist bottom line is still very much there.
I have to say that after a brief glance at it I put it in the bin.

MI, not surprised, given how much more ethnically mixed your patch of SE London is. I felt mortified for the sole black British family in our road - wonder how they felt about this?

none around here so far...as we're not a million miles away, will be on the lookout for them.

Tinker · 13/05/2004 12:53

Not in London but have had these for few years now. Always seem to deliver them very quietly, have never seen who does it.

Fio2 · 13/05/2004 12:54

I really cant beleive they get away with this, its disgusting

Marina · 13/05/2004 12:57

I saw our leafleteer - perfectly respectable looking young man, could have been a fogeyish student. If I had known what he was delivering I would have had a few words, I can tell you.
Dinosaur, I meant in the strictest sense of freedom of speech at election time, I guess. What makes me sadder is so far they are the only political party to have canvassed in our area.

Marina, send it back to them, minus a stamp. I wouldn't want anything to do with that disgusting lot in my house, either.

soyabean · 13/05/2004 19:47

Good suggestion Suedonim. Havent received anything here in S London. They put forward a candidate for the council about 13 years ago but lots of demos etc were held and they retreated, no sign since as far as aI know. But I will keep an eye out.

hmb · 13/05/2004 20:15

Send it back without the stamp with as big a pile of junk mail that you can collect and attach to it. That way they will have to pay the excess postage as well. Scum!

soyabean · 13/05/2004 21:48

Even better idea hmb. I will remember it

hmb · 13/05/2004 21:52

I'd have sugested a damn heavy housebrick to bump up the charges, but that sort of scum would probably throw it at an asylum seaker

Bozza · 13/05/2004 22:05

We received one the other day for the local council elections and I was slightly shocked. We live in a rural-ish, villagey, commuter type ward of Kirklees (Huddersfield). I was surprised that anyone would actually be standing here, let alone leafletting.

Agree with your description of the contents Marina. There was a bullet point list of facts inclduing - 2/3 of convenience stores are run by ethnic minorities. Whats that supposed to mean?

tigermoth · 13/05/2004 22:12

marina, UNISON staff here are going to do some anti BNP leafleting, urging people to vote (but not BNP) at the local elections. The local neighbourhood offices are keen to know if BNP leaflets are being handed out in their patch - your one knows already.
