So why am I the taxpayer being approached to pay his tab?

Bullshit!

I'm an ordinary family who gets ripped off all the time.

It happens.

MyTwoChocolateCoinsWorth · 02/12/2006 22:45

there's a different between being outraged by an injustice like this and demanding that the government steps in and uses public money to sort it out.

i think what happened was appauling, but that doesnt mean it is the government - or rather, the taxpayers - responsibility to sort it out.

sets a very dangerous precedent

I have a lot of sympathy for the farepack victims - they are probably amongst the poorest groups in society....

I don't know because I'll freely admit that I am totally out of touch with Real Life, but I expect that they used Farepack for their Christmas savings rather than a savings account because the latter would have been too accessible, and they would have felt tempted to dip into it to purchase necessities throughout the year...whereas a Christmas savings scheme would have been out of reach of temptation.

They probably just wanted to give their kids a good Christmas.

handlemecarefully · 02/12/2006 23:17

I'm happy for my taxes (or rather dh's) to go on this....

Er, Cod - when we were pg?

edam · 02/12/2006 23:24

I'm not sure anyone has suggested using public funds to compensate the victims - most of the suggestions I've seen are about getting the companies involved in the Farepak scheme to stump up. Particularly Halifax who allowed the company to carry on trading, taking people's money, even though it was in the shit. And knew damn well they'd just thrown their customers' money into one big pot for the bosses to dip into as and when, rather than in named accounts. And that it wasn't regulated by the FSA.

I think part of the attraction for savers was that it was run through local agents who would be your auntie Betty or your auntie Betty's best friend's daughter Zoe. So it was trusted. By people who aren't necessarily terribly experienced in dealing with the financial services industry (and the agents weren't either).

im bankrupt as a result of my business going under. i lost my house and everything i owned, i now live on benefits in a HA house, ive got a very long and depressing story of going up shit creek in a concrete canoe, so i know all about being poor and wanting to give my kids a good Xmas! this is not me being heartless to the situation they are in, im not in much of a better one myself! i simply do not agree with those people who are saying it is the governments duty to sort it out! it's not. it also irritates me that people complain about a nanny state yet expect to be rescued when things go wrong that are in no way related to or the fault of the government! its this whole we hate the big brother nanny government so dont interfere in our lives / help us its not fair you have to do something

MerryChristmasfromQV · 02/12/2006 23:35

Absolutely MTPW.

Glad you are back with us on a regular basis

MyTwoChocolateCoinsWorth · 02/12/2006 23:38

hello luv. hows tricks?

edam · 02/12/2006 23:41

I have absolutely no idea whether any of the people who have been turned over so comprehensively by Farepak have ever complained about the nanny state. But they may well have assumed there were laws that would protect them against thieves. Shame they don't seem to apply to rich businessmen, though.

MerryChristmasfromQV · 02/12/2006 23:42

Fabulous my lovely! Shattered though. Going to bed soon. Any further news on your pre-op probs?

MyTwoChocolateCoinsWorth · 02/12/2006 23:47

ive got to go back to see the consultant on the 7th dec, so i assume he'll spell it all out for me then! still got to wait for a sleep clinic appt though and i do know i cant get the op until after that.

however, the consultants secretary told me that he wants to discuss the procedure because he is not sure its the most appropriate one for me based on the info hes got from my gp.

now, i am mere woman of tiny brain but it seems to me that he should have read my notes and decided this before now!!!! what if my preop appt had gone thru ok?!! he'd have done the wrong bloody op!!!!

MerryChristmasfromQV · 02/12/2006 23:59

What a fuckwit!

dont be worried about regularly ringing his secretary and haranguing her for info....

It'll help, I'm pretty sure.....

MyTwoChocolateCoinsWorth · 03/12/2006 00:03

crikey - youre not his secretary are you qv??!!

MerryChristmasfromQV · 03/12/2006 00:06
