Tutter · 30/11/2006 12:09

can't believe you have questioned this over greg wiggle

hunkermunker · 30/11/2006 12:18

Yes, it's newsworthy.

And I am the God of deeming this.

So there.

zippitippitoes · 30/11/2006 12:20

yes..especially as he may become prime minister or not, this might make him less likely to stand

puddle · 30/11/2006 12:22

I think it's newsworthy.

Interesting that the leaders of the two main parties will have children with special needs. I

titchy · 30/11/2006 12:27

Not sure interesting is the word I'd use - tragic I think.

puddle · 30/11/2006 12:33

Yes Tissy it is tragic personally for both families.

I was thinking from a policy point of view and the fact that Cameron has talked about his son and his care to make political points. I wonder of Gordon will draw on his experiences in the same way?

trice · 30/11/2006 12:35

It affects his ability to lead the country. So it is news.

puddle · 30/11/2006 12:37

I don't think it would affect his ability Trice. His desire maybe.

tortoiseshell · 30/11/2006 12:38

I agree puddle - am very sad for GB though - I don't know what the implications of CF are, but i believe it's a better prognosis than historically? But BOTH leaders having a child with SN must have an implication on policy - even if it's just a raising of awareness.

I hope little Fraser isn't too badly affected.

buffythenappyslayer · 30/11/2006 12:41

they are discussing it on radio 2 now.ive emailed them as my dd has cf.

speedymama · 30/11/2006 12:43

Another important point is that the story will at least raise the profile of cystic fibrosis. Until this story, I did not know what it was, even though I have heard of it. That has to be a good thing for the researchers and charities involved in finding a treatment that will enable the sufferer to meet the average life expectancy.

Marina · 30/11/2006 12:47

I think it's significant politically and socially. As others have said, both the main (probable) party leaders now have first-hand experience of parenting young children and dealing with disability and/or chronic illness.
It can only make them more humane and connected with life's realities, hopefully.
I feel a lingering sadness for the Browns that on top of Jennifer's death they will have the extra worry of a child with CF. That seems a harsh coincidence

buffythenappyslayer · 30/11/2006 12:47

this is what me and my mum have just said.we have done lots of fundraising to help raise money for research,so now that this has been thrust into the news, hopefully more money will be put into research.

im just so relieved that we live in wales and that dd was diagnosed so early.just heard on radio that all newborns will be tested, hope it happens for the sake of lo's that go for months, sometimes years without being diagnosed.

Marina · 30/11/2006 12:51

Buffy, a friend had a worry over her baby and queried CF with the HV. She was told to home and lick him before they took bloods! This is England. He didn't have CF, but just the same
Roll on the day when checks at birth are available to the whole of the UK

foxinsocks · 30/11/2006 12:54

yes

and certainly more newsworthy than all the reality tv crap

buffythenappyslayer · 30/11/2006 12:59

marina, when we got told she had cf,the paediatrician said he got told that you can tell if they have cf from licking aswell!!its the salt that they sweat.(he never did lick dd,i wouldve been mortified!!)

we'd commented on how salty she was when we kissed her forehead,so it all made sense when we found out!

i never knew much about cf before dd was diagnosed, all i knew was that it was something to do with the lungs.

teh day we got told (hv came round and told us,and we had to go to the hospital the next day for sweat tests) well,it was the worse day of my life.id had a bad pregnancy (dd was twins but i lost one at 12 weeks) and then to be told she was so ill,was heartbreaking.

but to look at her now (shes 2) shes so fit and healthy, shes putting weight on for the first time and has grown in height aswell.it is a horrible disease, and hard work, but you just get on with it,and tbh, there are so many more worse diseases out there.

trice · 30/11/2006 13:31

I meant that it was going to be hard work for both of them (assuming that he is going to be a hands on father). He may find that his priorities change and he does not want such a time consuming job.

paulaplumpbottom · 30/11/2006 13:52

Does that mean tony would stay?????
