I'm going to France for 10 days with DH and DS in a couple of weeks and its all train based travel. I'm really worried :(

But those passengers were heros. I wonder if they'd like to come on holiday with me.

I think everyone is (or is going to be) ok thank to their actions and bravery.

I'm just back from a holiday near Whitehaven, Cumbria - you may recall the shootings there a few years back when a gunman went round the area randomly killing about 12 people. It's a beautiful area and we were not put off going back there by this one off tragic event that happened. Just remember how very very rare things like this are, and enjoy your holiday.

I know. It's irrational and bad things can happen anywhere. And living in fear is letting the terrorists win

Those men deserve medals though. So lucky they were there and clocked what was going on and over powering him

Just seen that 2 of the men who intervened were US marines. So they knew exactly how to tackle the gunman and put him out of action, and make sure his weapons were made safe too. wow, could have been much worse had they not been there.

hope all the injured make a speedy recovery.

Just heard it in the Beeb.

I'm with phantom. Bad / mad people exist everywhere. We can't let it limit us beyond basic precautions- eg I reported an abandoned bag to security in an oslo museum . Interestingly security was totally bemused as to why I had and went and looked in it!

ML29 · 22/08/2015 12:15

It could have been absolute carnage, no where to get to safety for any of the passengers, it doesn't bear thinking about the potential horror of it.

Luckily the Marine noticed the terrorist acting suspiciously, not many people would recognise the sound of a gun being loaded for behind a locked door. Those 4 guys were so brave to tackle someone with an AK47, he could have even been a suicide bomber.

Interestingly, I was taking a train from Lyon to Switzerland last week and there were 4 heavily armed security patrolling the platform, not sure if they were police or army, but first time I have ever seen that. Wonder if they already had an inkling of a terrorist threat on a train.

I'm surprised this isn't being discussed more extensively.

Those military trained men prevented a massacre. They'd have reacted instinctively because that's what they're trained to do. They were amazing.

Maybe people will remember this kind of thing next time they start moaning about "hired killers" as I see often here on MN.

whataboutbob · 23/08/2015 21:18

There's been some soul searching in the French press because the train staff barricaded themselves in their compartment, the terrorist was overpowered by Americans who were backed up by a British man. Echos of WW2- if you'd read it in a novel you'd have thought it was a stream of old cliches!

squidzin · 24/08/2015 10:06

Legion d'honneur, France's highest honour has been awarded to the 4 men who prevented carnage.
Quite right too.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 25/08/2015 17:42

I notice that the terrorist has been marched to court bare footed and blind folded!!!! As far I am concerned he is a scum bag but how do the French get away with it.
