There will always be cases of mature 14 and 15 year old girls wanting to 'do it' to see what all the fuss is about - christ, I was a 15 year old girl once and a stunning one at that, even if I do say so myself. I remember exactly what it felt like to have the body of a woman way before I had the maturity to go with it. Frustrating doesn't even come close to describing it.

There will also always be the case of the 15 year old girl getting pregnant by her 21 year old boyfriend (like Pruni's mum and dad) and they go on to get married and live happily ever after, and the two 15 year olds experimenting on the living room settee after consuming a bottle of White Lightening when they're supposed to be doing homework.

The problem here is that there are some men who will always be attracted to having sexual intercourse with young girls, and these young girls don't necessarily see what they're being used for. Generally speaking, girls mature faster than boys, and in my personal experience a girl of 15 has about the same level of maturity as a boy of 22. Some people don't have a problem with that, but unfortuately the law does. It is there to protect the majority of girls, children, who are not yet fully aware of the consequences of having sexual intercourse at such a young age.

"Because the age of consent is arbitrary isn't it? Nothing magical happens at 16."

I've always thought it a bit weird that a bloke could, in theiry, take a 15-year-old girlfriend out for alcopops on the eve of her sixteenth birthday and get her in the mood - and, as long as he waited until after midnight to shag her (and she was consenting, obviously) he would not actually be breaking the law.

UnquietDad · 20/11/2006 15:12

THEORY sorry

PeachyClair · 20/11/2006 15:57

Unquiet Dad- that's exactly what my sister's ex did! Mind you it lasted 3 years and they seemed happy and stable

Is strange

TheHighwayCod · 20/11/2006 15:58

ggpoppopo you dd ahd a boyfrind of 50???

expatinscotland · 20/11/2006 16:03

One of my first cousins was under the age of consent in the state of Texas - 17 - when she fell pregnant to her 21-year-old boyfriend.

They married and are still together 12 years later, w/another son in addition to the one she gave birth to two days after her 17th birthday.

For him to have been charged as a paedo would have wrecked her life, his and the life of their son.

boboggglimpopo · 20/11/2006 16:04

No - she was just found with her grim friend's grimmer boyfriend - a 19 year old known drug dealer - not a 50 year old man.... but I am talking about age disparity. Here in France, once you are 15, you are free to express your sexuality as you wish ande with whom you wish. Below 15 is technically aggravated rape.

What about that Dutch pro-paedophilia politcal group who want to legalise paedophilia and for whom people actually vote. I heard him interviewed on the radio once and he was talking about toddlers and animals and sex all in the same breath. Sick, sick world.

joelallie · 20/11/2006 17:29

Yes 16 is arbitary. But how else can you do it? Some children may be ready for sex at 15 but some won't be. I had sex at 15 with a much older man - didn't enjoy it and regret it now as it affected my attitudes to sex generally. If a girl is ready for sex I don't really see how the age of her partner matters. If she isn't ditto.

fannyannie · 20/11/2006 17:36

when I was at school there was a girl who was always dating men well into their 30's. Her 'prize' man (who turned out to be a complete gem) was actually 36 when they got together (when she was 15),

They married a few years back and are now very happy with 4 kids (she had 4 under 5yrs). Her dad was furious about it, her mum loved him, and there's no WAY he could have been described as a paedo.

paulaplumpbottom · 21/11/2006 09:07

I had read about that party, bobo. It was discusting. They can't do anything about them though as they aren't doing anything illegal. In fact it would be legal in this country as well. I'm sure they'll be complaining to the human rights commision any day.

I think his comments are very reasonable, as my oldest is now 13, and eyeing up girls with a vengence, it seems mad to me that he could end up on the sex offenders register for having sex in a couple of years time witha girl friend his own age - i know that doesn't happen often, but it does sometimes. Certainly when i was 14 and 15 i knew plenty of girls who were having sex, in consensual relationships with boys of 16 or 17 - they weren't sex offenders either. i met my now Dh when I was 18, he's 6 years older than me, and are realationship has lasted more than 25 years, We have other friend who started going out together when they were 14 - they are still together 30 years later. The law really does need looking at in this area, and I think it was sensible of him to make these comments to reopen the discussion, without the tabloid hysteria over paedophiles - the guy who took the 6 yo from her bath is a paedo, an 18 yo boy with a 15 yo girl having consensual sex is definately not.

ruty · 21/11/2006 11:10

there are huge differences in the maturity of girls aged 13 and girls aged 16 for a start. and there are huge differences in the maturity of different girls at age 16. So it is unhelpful to generalize like this. I stil think any bloke who has sex knowingly with a 13 year old girl is a bit dodgy, to say the least. 15 and up is a bit more difficult.

bigbird2003 · 21/11/2006 22:35

In some countries they have an age rule, 2or 3 years I think

So as long as the teens are within 2 years of each other, it isn't an offence. So with a 3 year rule, it's ok for a 13 year old and 16 year old but 17 year old is unlawful, 15 + 18 ok 19 not iykwim

I think that is a good way to go( as a parent of 3 teens)
I dated older men from 16, eldest being 30. I also dated a 13 year old when I was 15.

I think the article has a point though. If a family member/friend is abusing the teen that's different, but to class teens with teens as sex offenders is wrong.

Remember last year when the news went mad over teachers on the sex offenders list? One of them was 22 and had an affair with a 15 year old and prosecuted. They went on to marry and have children and are still together. But he will always be on the sex offenders list. I personally think that is so very wrong

ruty · 22/11/2006 12:29

i dated a 16 year old at 13. but he did try to get me to sleep with him and dropped me when i wouldn't. two, three year gap law sounds quite sensible tho.

Tortington · 22/11/2006 12:31

no child should date anyone unless a child of same age until the age of 14

from 14 max 2 year gap until 16

then you move out get your own place and a job you lazy git
