This is good news for single mums. No doubt some are a prime target for paedos.

Hmmm. I can see the intentions here are good, but I'm not sure it would really help anyone. In order to get the police to check out your boyfriend/prospective partner, you would need to demonstrate "reasonable suspicion". If you had "reasonable suspicion", wouldn't you just end the relationship?

Even without that problem, I doubt the most vulnerable, whom this scheme aims to protect, would have the confidence to go through with getting their partner checked.

Agree with Hallgerda - even if you had "reasonable suspicion and it turned out they had no convictions, I'm not sure I'd wanna be with a person who had had me police checked!

My mum thought it was a great way to sort out boyfriends... any male staying over in our house (due to mum fostering) needed to be police checked - she went with the theory that if they refused, then they were no good anyway!

They keep talking about people taking the law into their own hands, but thats hardly happened at all in the States. I think there were a few cases when it was first introduced, but it quickly died down.

I think it is a good idea in that it may make paedo's think twice about targetting single mums. I agree with Hallgerda and Flamesparrow too though.

There's a co-incidence, I started a thread on this as well.

I'm not sure it is well-intentioned. I'm always extremely suspicious of the intentions of any government dept, tbh, particularly the Home Office.
