Britain bomb scares

There is a ongoing bomb scare in Exeter today. The last few days I've been feeling really twitchy.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11705592/Exeter-city-centre-closed-off-after-bomb-scare.html

I really wanted to take the children on a train journey to London this summer holiday. I know we shouldn't bow to terrorists by stopping plans but Im seriously feeling anxious right now. Anyone else?

People are very odd, Stella... having dealt with a number of bizarre luggage incidents at airports, if they have said they are not treating is as a terrorist incident, I am entirely happy that some numpty did something spectacularly odd, that makes no sense to anyone else, but that in their own head made perfect sense (I can't be bothered to carry my case while I get lunch and it won't fit in a locker, so I'm going to use my bike lock and leave it here, and wrap all this cable wire round it so no one can nick anything)

I've had security incidents sparked by a hairdryer and a perfume bottle (it was cut glass but apparently 'shaped like a grenade' - er, no it wasn't. It was a perfectly normal perfume bottle) so I have a very high tolerance for this stuff (am also old enough to remember being evacuated from work on what seemed like a weekly basis after hoaxes etc).

The sensible tolerance level is probably somewhere between us Grin I'm definitely not saying that we shouldn't take suspicious objects or threats seriously, but if I had a pound for every evacuation caused by someone's luggage, I wouldn't be on my way to work now.

Fingers crossed we all stay safe over the summer x

As someone who once in a former life had to call the number for the bomb squad (not as exciting as it sounds) then watched with a mix of embarrassment and interest as the whole scenario played out, to discover it was a cassette tape that had been sent in the post, I'm fairly relaxed about bomb alerts per se.

It is not surprising people are much more jumpy at the present. However, please don't let the terrorists win. Think of all those people who stayed in London during the blitz, despite much much greater dangers. I'm sure they felt a huge amount of fear, but their courage helped keep the country going. We need to also face our fears and not be bowed.

Well I'm in Exeter and it looks like it wasn't anything worse than forgotten luggage or malicious pranksters. Buses etc all back to normal now and the fact it didn't make mainstream news is quite telling. Been a slightly anxious today - we did have a thankfully inept terrorist bomb a few years ago so I think people realise it's not beyond the realms of possibility.

I can believe in the spectacularly odd walking amongst us!

(Now trying to imagine the thought processes of the bomb squad: 'this is probably just something spectacularly odd, but we'll blow it up anyhow' (controlled explosions must make for fun at work, and a considerably better day than some of the things they face)).

I think everyone's first thought was that rather inept bomber, Ser. It made everyone a bit jittery.

The latest seems to be that they are looking for culprits and more information. Culprits for what isn't exactly very clear but presumably placing something that was supposed to look like a bomb, rather than actually being one or it would be bigger news.

I feel the same as you op. My youngest daughter has been asking to go to London for years. I know I'm going to have to take her as her older brother and sister go there a lot (with their Dad - my ex). I don't want to go though. My husband's working there now - he probably spends at least a week per month there - and I really hate it.

There was a bomb scare in Watford a couple of weeks ago, it didn't make the national news so I wonder how often they happen around the country? I was in town when it happened and I was a bit freaked out tbh - but not enough to prevent me going into town again a week later.
