Why does it matter if the meat we eat comes from odgs?

report

If you eat meat would you eat dog? I don't like the idea, but can't say why, it just doesn't seem right.

Provided the animals aren't reared in any worse conditions than other animals reared for meat, why is eating dog seen as such a bad thing? (by those who are happy to eat other animals)

Apples and oranges, Mcg. You say domesticated, I said dogs.... there are wild dogs, and there are dogs that used to be domesticated that are now wild.

People have pet rabbits, sheep, rats, horses too. But other people see them as foodstuff.

That we have domesticated them makes no difference if your ancestors saw them as food and your culture still does, in whole or in part.

There are 2 entirely different arguments here:

  1. The way these dogs are treated/sourced
  2. The thought of eating them
  1. Needs to be addressed
  2. Is a matter of choice
mcgiblets · 24/06/2015 19:07

No there are no ancestors who saw them as a food source. Any culture that sees dogs as food have done so relatively recently.

It is not a matter of choice, it should be subject to a worldwide ban and enforced with appropriate sanctions. Other people see humans as a food source is that ok as well? What is different?

Superexcited · 24/06/2015 20:10

Of course it is different to seeing humans as a food source. Eating a dog does not Make somebody a cannibal.
You cannot compare eating dogs with eating humans.

mcgiblets · 24/06/2015 20:31

If the argument that edible meat is fine if any culture thinks so then human meat must be fine also. Cannibalism has been a constant in the whole history of the human race.

This is why using the 'culture' argument is ridiculous.

Superexcited · 24/06/2015 20:37

Cannibalism is illegal in every country, eating dogs isn't. I get the bio magnification arguments and would like to know more about that but I don't get the argument that some animals are ok to eat for moral reasons whilst others are not.

mcgiblets · 24/06/2015 21:08

So now it's about what is legal and what isn't. I think eating dogs should be illegal in every country in the world and in international law, would that be the end of it then?

Also cannibalism isn't illegal in every country.

wtfih · 24/06/2015 21:16

I find it disgusting, shocking and terrifying that so many of you think it is acceptable to eat dogs?Shock

MythicalKings · 24/06/2015 21:23

I eat cow, pig and lamb. Why wouldn't I eat dog?

Reginafalangie · 24/06/2015 22:03

The fact they eat dog doesn't bother me but how they treat and slaughter them does.

Superexcited · 24/06/2015 22:18

In which countries is cannibalism not illegal ? I thought it was illegal in every country but I suppose there could be some remote countries which don't really have laws as such.
If we make eating dog meat illegal in every country then why not other animals too? In some countries dogs are bred specifically for the good chain (unfortunately dog thefts for illegal trade are usually common place in those countries too). But if they ban breeding dogs for the food chain then why not ban breeding of every other animal too?

Dogs and humans are very different. Even the UK treats them very different. A doctor would be prosecuted for deliberately killing humans but vets can legally put healthy dogs to sleep. You just cannot compare humans and dogs it's a bloody ridiculous comparison.

Only clean healthy ones certified fit for for human consumption and without the risk of any bio magnification affects. Same as I would eat horse, pig, goat, chicken, rabbit....

Morloth · 25/06/2015 10:30

Meh either it is OK to eat animals or it isn't.

IrianofWay · 25/06/2015 10:37

I don't see why it's anyone's business what I (or anyone else) chooses to eat or not eat. I eat a little meat - not that keen on it these days to be honest - but no, I wouldn't eat dog, or cat, or human for that matter. Why? Because I prefer those creatures as companions and that is how I see them. Why all this nagging recently to eat more and different sentient beasts? We saw a sign in town the other day advertising kangaroo, springbok and crocodile burgers. Why? Just for curiosity? Just to say you've done it.

NathalieM · 26/06/2015 16:22

I understand the point people are making regarding all animals being equal, and I do completely agree. The problem I would have with it, as many others have highlighted, is the years of dogs in society as domesticated animals.

Over many centuries, dogs have become close companions to humans. The real argument should focus on our treatment of animals as a entire species, as opposed to focusing on just one animal. It highlights the crucial balance we need to create between animal care and consumption.
