The killer appears to fit typical sort of mass shooter profile - young, 'loner', male. Apparently he attended an hour's bible study in the black church, before opening fire.

It's not clear if it was a random anti-black hate crime, or if the pastor, one of the dead, a Democratic state senator, was the target. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clementa_C._Pinckney

The killer's getaway vehicle bore Confederate flag plates, and he had a jacket with Rhodesia and apartheid-era South Africa flags. time.com/3926593/charleston-killer-flags/

A race relations expert on Sky News yesterday was saying that if you own a gun in America you are very unlikely to use it to protect yourself or your property. You are going to use it to commit suicide, or to kill someone you love in a fit of passion, or in an accident. That is what the statistics show.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....Americans are CRAZY! What a scary place to live.

'Guns don't kill people. People kill people'. What a load of crap!

if Americans are to manage matters in their own country without comment/interference from outside, does that mean that americans cannot intervene in other countries' business?

After some detective work, two social media users managed to track down a website called Last Rhodesian, that was registered to Dylann Roof.

On the website (now taken down) he included his manifesto. Not even Fox News can dispute it was a hate crime now.

He starts off by saying he was NOT raised in a racist home or environment, and goes on to say, it was the Trayvon Martin case (February 2012) which started to change his thinking.

After a few introductory paragraphs, he then starts a section labelled Blacks, which opens with...

"I think it is is fitting to start off with the group I have the most real life experience with, and the group that is the biggest problem for Americans.

N**rs are stupid and violent. At the same time they have the capacity to be very slick. Black people view everything through a racial lense [sic].

It continues for many paragraphs and makes for uncomfortable but not surprising reading. He also talks briefly about his opinions on Jews, Hispanics and East Asians, plus a section on patriotism (he hates the sight of the U.S. flag).

There's a Daily Mail article which has the full text - I couldn't find the full text anywhere else - and I've linked to it below. However I've used a website called donotlink.com, to link to the article, so if you do take a look you won't add to the Daily Mail's 'Google Juice' in search engine rankings.

Gun-toting is part of the American mythological psyche, though, rather like mom's apple pie and drive-in-movies. The only difference is that apple pie and movies don't kill people. To change the way Americans view guns you have to first change the way Americans view Americans.

They spend so much money and effort on global spying and monitoring every tiny thing.
When will people wake up to realise all their communications are being tracked, not for terrorism protection, nothing to do with it. They can't see a terrorist under their nose.
They collect our data for commercial economic advantage. Which we enable.

The modern narcissism epidemic will lead to more hate, more self affirming grandiose murder. More harm. We are starting to see it in the UK but thankfully we don't have gun culture.

Lioninthesun · 22/06/2015 21:27

It's astounding how many news stories there are on gun crimes, racially motivated crimes, toddlers with guns, shooting sprees in schools, police gunning down African Americans I see on a daily basis on fb and the general uk press. How they can't see what the rest of the world can see in just a day is beyond me - surely they can't be classified as a first world democracy, especially considering their ridiculous senate system stopping any progress for the country at all. You'd think after all of this time with Obama at the helm talking sense something would have changed for progress, but the system is rigged so they just keep going around in circles. How will they ever develop?
Sorry to any Americans, but it is so frustrating to watch. I'd have emigrated!

Seems like a horrendous place to live. I am so grateful I was born here.
