KnittedJimmyChoos · 27/04/2015 20:00

Just heard now on the 90 second catch up, it makes me so cross, its child abuse not child porn.

I am going to complain again, I really hope I can inspire some of you to do the same.

I complained when Eddie Mair used the term repeatedly on PM a few months back, got a very patronising reply back.

KnittedJimmyChoos · 27/04/2015 20:48

A few of us on here complained when it was used in Ref to Gary Glitter. I and others got a reply back saying they had removed term from some reports. I'm going to complain again!

Keep complaining, it is completely unacceptable and the BBC should be setting an example

cdtaylornats · 29/04/2015 22:04

Perhaps he was trying to be accurate, a common effect you get with changing descriptions to "correct" usage is you lose fine definition. An example of this would be someone described as "differently abled" rather than deaf or blind.

Child abuse covers a vast range - a picture of a child being beaten would be child abuse, but child porn is specifically about children being abused for sexual reasons. The distinction is important - while pictures of either depict a crime being perpetrated on the child, only the second type of pictures are illegal to possess.

reddaisy · 01/05/2015 23:17

'Child sex abuse images' would be more accurate than 'child porn' which wrongly implies consent which obviously could never be given.

MrsHathaway · 01/05/2015 23:46

Last time I complained, they said they were sorry I had been upset, they noted my request for clarity, but they didn't think it was a problem.

And they changed every last reference in the offending article (news website).

So it's worth complaining, even though the response you get may annoy you.

"Images of child sex abuse". Not hard. And you'd think the BBC of all institutions would want to be seen to get it right.
