The driver had only passed his test a week previously.

I didn't allow my DS and DD to have passengers for a month after passing their tests and their schools also insist that parents sign a consent form for their children to be passengers in fellow students cars. - They all nip off the the local cafe or shops during lunch and free periods.

I don't know that road at all but from the photo it looks like it has to be driven with a great deal of care.

Purely based on the number of people in the car I would think that the car was overloaded and that may have played some part in the accident.

Teenagers who have recently passed their test are at particular risk of having an accident. I can attest to that fact having being a witness to an accident whereby a car driven by a teen driver (who it had turned out had passed his test two weeks previously) ran into the back of another vehicle. I am in the car behind thinking, "OMG he's not going to stop in time". Fortunately no-one was seriously hurt but the teen driver and passenger were somewhat shaken. Speed in that case was determined by the police to be a factor.
He was also fortunate not to have been prosecuted.

Hmmm. Makes me think with real fondness of my parents. I could pretty much do what I wanted to do as a teenager (sleep with my boyfriend - no problem; join far-left political groups - fine; punk hairstyle - go for it) but they wouldn't let me be driven by other teenagers. Total ban. They would always insist on picking me up themselves until at 18 I met DH whom they considered to be a 'safe' driver (he was and still is). My parents had a long view that most bad stuff that happens to teenagers can be put right, but being in a car crash is irremediable.

We were only talking to our two teenagers last weekend about the fact that they will have to use 'P' plates for at least 6 months after their test. I've also told them I shall have a tracker fitted, so that I can tell what speed they're travelling at any given time!!

But one essential thing - I believe - is that no more than two people should be in the car at once - at least for the first few months after passing the test. Teenagers will egg each other on, particularly if there are several boys and girls.

I've yet to work out how I'm going to police this!!!
