I don't even know if the alternatives would have been any better but for me, bibi is the smarmy face of what's happeneing to Palestinians.

Will the situation ever improve under Netanyahu?

Netanyahu saying 'no Palestinian State on my watch' and the Palestinians still domocratically represented by a Sunni Jihadi government known as Hamas?

Hmmm, on balance (if there is any semblance of one) I'd suggest not.

PeachyParisian · 18/03/2015 15:26

I watched the Theroux documentary on ultra Zionism on Netflix recently and was really affected by one young teenage boys reaction to Israeli soldier behaviour. He said he would go to Israel and kill them there, hurt the people they love. It gave me some insight into why Hamas has been democratically selected to represent them.
I don't want to go into who started it, and end up buying into the Israeli/US rhetoric that Palestinians are bringing it on themselves, but it is clear to see who has the power to make it all stop and that they are choosing to prolong the conflict.

And who is that Peachy?

PeachyParisian · 18/03/2015 19:01

The west, but within the conflict Israel hold the chips.
I am certainly not a Hamas apologist, and do not condone their actions whatsoever but Israel is significantly wealthier and better equipped.
As I said I don't want to go into who is to blame! Just wondering if there will ever be a solution that doesn't leave one side destroyed and whether that will be possible in the foreseeable future now that Netanyahu is sticking around.

Thanks Peachy that pretty much sums up my view.
In a sense I think that Netanyahu remaining in power might cause some sort of shift in thinking, globally, than if there was a more moderate PM at the helm. He's already caused a lot of damage to the US/Israeli relationship.
And I do think there will need to be global pressure to effect a change.
Netenyahu has also stated clearly he has no interest in pursuing a solution. In fact I suspect we'll see another "mowing the lawn" exercise in Gaza before too long.

PeachyParisian · 18/03/2015 19:32

Sorry if I wasn't clear before!
At least some good with come of Netanyahus despicable behaviour then, if he's pissing off the US they might be more inclined to stop endorsing his bullshit which would have a huge knock on effect for the rest of the west.
I'm rather ashamed that Europe especially are just standing by.
The saddest thing is he has been democratically elected, so the majority support his views in Israel Sad

Around 25% of the vote went to Likud. But they got the most seats so he'll get to head up a new coalition government.
I've followed this conflict since the 90s. Sad that resolution seems further away than ever.

PeachyParisian · 19/03/2015 22:01

Argh so 75% of the population don't want him? Terrible

The blame game goes round and round in circles, but whoever is in the White House, or leading Israel, have to somehow convince the Israeli electorate, that a peace deal id possible with a Hamas led Palestinian government whose original Charter called for the end of an Israel State, as is remains firmly in place to this day to please the Palestinian/Hamas masses, 'not for turning'.

So that will NEVER happen, especially to all the Israelis living within tunnel/missile range of Hamas, which gets larger with imported Iranian tunneling/missile technology.

Arguably the closest to a peace was around 2004 via the Geneva Accord, right before the Palestinians thought it a good idea to elect a previously small terrorist group to represent them in government. Looking at the demographics of the Palestinians etc, how many percent actually voted for Hamas?

To my white safe-in-European Christian opinion, the citizens of both sides need to trust their own politicians and those of the other side, to both deliver and maintain a peace - and even if one side ever had that trust, forget the eclipse, it will be a blue moon when both have similar confidence in the politicians OF BOTH SIDES to deliver, again.

So in just looking to see how far we are away from the 'goodwill' of the Geneva Accord from both sides (when Israel bulldozed their settlements and withdrew from the Gaza, only to Hamas elected), never mind progressing, we are indeed a long way away from a solution.

Blaming the Americans is a time honoured Middle East regional excuse, to carry on doing what they want to do within the region, often to deflect from their own actions & ambitions. IMHWAO.

SlaggyIsland · 21/03/2015 16:59

Hamas have lartery indicated willingness to agree to a two-state solution. I'm not their biggest fan but the narrative that places all blame at their door is neither useful or plausible. Nor does it explain the ongoing illegal settlements in the PA controlled West Bank.
It's also worth pointing out that Likud do not agree with a two-state solution. There are no better than Hamas in this.

SlaggyIsland · 21/03/2015 17:00

That should read they not there. Autocorrect.

Isitmebut · 22/03/2015 22:14

SlaggyIsland .... why do you think in answer to the Geneva Accord, when there was 'road map' goodwill with influential people on both sides, the Palestinians then elected Hamas in 2006?

Hamas 'indicating' anything to make it easier to import replacements for the thousands of rockets they fired, months having fired those rockets and down to half inventory, is hardly likely to sway the voters in the Israeli firing line - so what Israeli political party is going to say 'NOW is the time to give Hamas another victory to brag about - rather than make those that elected them, think twice NEXT time on choosing a military solution, when waging a war from a (Gaza Strip) area smaller than the Isle of Wight, pact with civilians.
