regarding the story in the paper today will you be happy to admit the men from the council to inspect your house and see how you have improved it ,only to be taxed a higher rate ?We have a conservatory in our home ,which we have had built on our land and paid for with our money, they say if the bring in the scheme and we dont let them in we will be fined .They are intending to slap charges on to anyone with a patio, greenhouse etc.

Is this about council tax revaluation?

Will only admit someone if the council can prove they've been CRB checked. Just because I don't see why I should be forced admit strangers into my home.

nearlythree · 27/10/2006 22:44

Am deeply worried about the fact they can take photos, which will inevitably show possessions too, not to mention the CRB thing as edam says. Think this government have gone totally bonkers and must really want to lose the next election tbh.

edam · 27/10/2006 22:46

If they take photos of the inside I think I'll be due a rebate, state of this place!

mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 22:50

i think the fine for not letting them in will be something like £1000 then it will go up by £200 per day It says in thepaper tha the scheme is being started in northern ireland before coming here.I cant see why beacsue we haveworked hard and improved our homes we should be penalised by this,im bloody furious already

Must admit I hope they come when the dcs have been running riot. We'll be first on their list as recently added a g'floor shower room and needed pp.

mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 22:54

nearlythreemaybe you could star a savings scheme now seriously i think its an awful idea and will potentially be a lot of trouble about it.All of mumsnet refuse to pay i say

Are you in NI, mummylin? Think you tend to get the rubbish ideas first as your votes don't matter much to the government.

mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 23:11

not quite sure what you mean, but i just think for all the people who have worked and saved to improve their homes it is soul destroying. And i am not into politics ( but i do vote ) personally i think all parties are the same rubbishI realise that not everyone will agree with my views but they are entitled to that.

No notin NI just clicked what you meant,i am in Bournemouth /uk this is what it says in the paper today.i have it in front of me

Yes, this has been approved as I understand it by a small committee of MPs. NI tends to get the short straw in these things. I vote too - regard it as a privilege considering so many people can't without a gun at their heads - but not easy to decide who to vote for.

"The tax will hit Northern Ireland next April, but a review of town hall finances for England, currently under way, is thought to be looking at the same system."

mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 23:23

it wil be interesting to see if they actually go through with this plan, there wont be anything soon that we are able to do without being taxed! the mind boggles. The paper dosent say when this scheme is starting , but it does say that inspectors will be viewing every way improvements to our homes have been made.

OP posts:
mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 23:27

thankyou teejaye that makes it easier for me to explain for those who havent seen it.

That's outrageous, would I get a discount if I let my house go into disrepair? I understand about paying by the surface built but the inside of a house? please, are we punished to try to be confortable at our own cost?

JoolsToo · 27/10/2006 23:39

the electric fence is on order

mummylin2495 · 27/10/2006 23:48

they will really have us all over a barrel because of the hefty fine they will make us pay.then people will be fined for not paying the original fine and so it goes on .then we get behind with the mortgage ,then we wont have to worry anymore cause we dont own a house anymore !

OP posts:
TinyGang · 27/10/2006 23:58

So we won't really have a choice in this if we just get fined for not letting them in.

I don't know why they don't just micro-chip us all at birth and be done with it. Then they could track our every waking movement and thought.

Chandra · 28/10/2006 00:00

Do you ever feel as if the taxes system has not changed much since Robin Hood's day?

Are we going to be taxed for the number of windows or for keeping a clean loo? I know that dirty loos lower the price of property at valuations, does that means that a well presented house belonging to a Flylady is going to be taxed at a higher rate?

mummylin2495 · 28/10/2006 00:03

i will not be happy with a strange male going round my house taking photo,s ect.in the paper i read the reporter is asking why people arent already protesting about it ,im sure they will if this thing takes off.

Callisto · 28/10/2006 11:43

I would be very interested to know if the council actually can fine a person for not allowing access to their own home. I don't think that sounds legal. I am happy to be the first test cast at court for non-payment of fine.

mummylin2495 · 28/10/2006 12:16

that is an interesting thought, because if we tried to get in other peoples houses we would probably be arrested ,so what would make it right for the council to do it?

What about the Human Rights Act - the right to a private family life? I believe the gov. have been told they would win on this but they have been defeated on other human rights issues.

mummylin2495 · 28/10/2006 16:26

i have no idea but surely if everyone protested about it we could change things around ,im not gonna just let them in or pay up without a fight. But like you nearlythree it is our homes which we have worked and paid for,( still paying )and we have alread paid tax on the labour and the materials so can see no reason for the goverment to then tax us yet again,im sure we must have human rights somewhere, but the government seems hell bent on us soon having no rights at all.

QuootieSpookypie · 28/10/2006 16:32

I am not letting anyone in my house, fine or not. Its a sh*t hole though, so it might be in my financial intrest! If they gave warning, id wreck the place. Make it like a squat Just out of principal.

Gobbledispook · 28/10/2006 16:36

This is a joke right?!?!

How does the interior of our homes affect how we use public services, which are, after all, what our council tax pays for?? It doesn't make any sense to me.

In addition, more bedrooms and a scenic view probably cost you more to purchase in the first place!!

Think I'll hold off on my loft conversion then!!
