I realise this is not strictly on-topic, but the Salvation Army are complete mentalists.

Not only do they have a history of homophobic policies, but they are one of the governments most staunch supporters of the Coalition's failed Workfare programmes.

Over 350 other charities have signed the Keep Volunteering Voluntary agreement:

"As charities and voluntary organisations we know the value of volunteering. Volunteering means people independently choosing to give their time freely to help others and make the world a better place. Workfare schemes force unemployed people to carry out unpaid work or face benefit sanctions that can cause hardship and destitution. We believe in keeping volunteering voluntary and will not participate in government workfare schemes.”

My nephew worked for the Salvation Army on the cwp as a 'conscript' he was treated with total respect and courtesy by the manager and asst manager, he wanted to use the till and learn customer service but had no smart clothes so he was GIVEN totally free of charge 3 pairs of smart trousers and 4 shirts, tea and coffee were provided free and the manager paid for his lunch when he had no money, when his bus fares were not paid by the cwp provider the manager was straight on the phone demanding it got sorted.

At the end of his placement he had enjoyed it so much he stayed on as a volunteer, 3 weeks ago the asst manager left DN applied for and got the vacant post, that's 4 days a week at a salary well above NMW (and he can do as much paid overtime as he wants).

If that's the way the Sally treats its 'conscripts' then I think they are doing a fucking good job.

BTW they may have a history of homophobic policies, but look at their website they have a robust inclusion policy now

Oh and don't forget the British Govt also has a history of homophobic policies but that does not seem to stop people claiming benefits from the Govt via the tax payer does it?

Oldsu-

I don't doubt your nephew was treated with respect. I'm sure they treat all of their volunteers with respect, in principle.

My problem is that by using the coalition's Workfare schemes, they are actively harming unemployed people's chances of finding work.

These schemes have been shown empirically to not work, and in fact, people who are sent on Workfare schemes are, on average, slightly less likely to find work 6 month on.

Not only that - just as you could argue that it is wrong in principle to force unemployed people to work for free (social security is paid for through taxation), the use of Workfare schemes harms every employee.

It contributes to unemployment and low wages because firms are more willing to take on free labour than paid workers. So people looking for work are either short of another job, or they have to accept worse pay and working conditions.

The whole thing is just a horrible idea from start to finish. No charity should be involved with it.

Oldsu · 15/03/2015 20:48

No they don't treat their volunteers and CWP placements in respect 'in principle' its part of their beliefs and ethos actually (although you don't have to be a Christian to work for them DN is a Pagan )

I'm not sure why you're being defensive about this. I am not referring to how the SA treats its volunteers or forced placements on a personal level.

I'm referring to the fact that they use forced unpaid labour in the form of the Workfare programme.

This is unethical, even moreso for a charity. Charities aren't supposed to engage in behaviour which is socially harmful.
