59 y.o. woman planning to be a surrogate to dead daughter's child

Mentally preparing myself for a lynching, but I think this is actually a bit selfish- www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/11427953/British-woman-hopes-to-fall-pregnant-with-dead-daughters-baby-in-world-medical-first.html

Surely a better idea if she is desperate for a grandchild would be to use a younger surrogate to lower the risks to her and the unborn child's health? Also, given her age, that would mean that her grandchild would most likely be an orphan by the time he or she is in their 20s.

I read that over the weekend and just thought WTF?

Apparently the mother "claims" it was her dying daughter's wish - there is no confirmed evidence of this. I'm glad the HFEA are contesting this. I don't mean to be unsympathetic but can you imagine the repercussions if this case was allowed?

I think surrogacy can be a wonderful thing, but carrying your own grandchild when you are postmenopausal is just fraught with issues IMO.

My thoughts are pretty similar to both of yours.

While my heart goes out to the lady for her loss. I strongly believe it should not be allowed to go ahead for her own sake as well as any resulting baby.

ugh, that is ghoulish.. I do feel sorry for the woman but I don't think this should be done.

Having only seen the headline of this and not read the story, I thought it was all kinds of wrong!

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 23/02/2015 13:43

Why would anyone think it is in the child's interest to be born without either parent alive/in their lives? It's not as if the daughter had a husband who wants this to happen (which would be completely different). They are proposing to use donor sperm.

I really sympathise for the lady in losing her daughter prematurely, but the potential child is the one we should be considering here.

I think I know this woman! Holy shit...
I didn't know she was still contemplating this let alone actively pursuing it.

It's not as though she'd really be getting a 'grandaughter' as it would be like bringing up another daughter (she couldn't hand her back to mummy as she'd have to be the mummy). How confusing for the poor child.

Plus, I can't deny it seems a bit sick if I'm honest.
