tranquility??

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 10:59

heard on Today programme about new survey - apparently an unspecified place in NE came out as mosty tranquil with London/SE being least tranquil region, Surrey the least tranquil county
(no surprises there, I guess)
the older I get, the more I appreciate tranquility - our latest move was precisely intended to get a calmer, more peaceful life away from frenetic SE. I'll go and get my slippers & pipe now shall I?!

No-one else interested or are you all too stressed out by this growing lack of tranquility?

I'm interested. Just forgotten what it feels like recently. I often take to my heels and head off into Exmoor on my own just to calm myself down. I think it's something we all need but others find it other ways I suppose.

Where did you move to Ran?

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 11:21

well apart from to the hills to an area of outstanding natural beauty, actually

Seriously, we thought long and hard and decided we needed more peace & quiet and that a long commute was worth this. So are you nr Exmoor or is it yr occasional refuge?

DH wants to move to the countryside for a more tranquil existence. I'm still deciding whether to trade access to public transport, walking to the hight street etc for a serene existence in a quaint village in the countryside which would also mean driving everywhere.

The most tranquil place I have ever visited was my father's graveside in Jamaica. I sat on his gravestone and the only thing I could hear was birds twittering away - no distant traffic hums which you can still discern in many of the tranquil spots throughtout the UK.

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 11:28

Sorry, it sounds cliche, but honestly, tranquility comes form w/i.

This whole British 'move to the country' thingy mystifies me to no end.

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 11:30

partly, of course. But we are affected by environment whether we like it or not. I swear living under a flightpath/close to v busy road does have a hugely detrimental effect even if the person doesn't realise it at the time.
I can no longer tolerate city-living, oh sensitive soul that i am . The occasional visit it fine, but i want to hear birdsong, breathe clean, sweet air and look out on the rolling hills around me.

Surrey is the least ?

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 11:32

Yes, but the more people who move out, the more they bring those problems you sought to escape w/them.

I've lived in both.

They both have cons and pros, same as anyplace else.

One's no better than the other in many respects.

Glad you found where you belong, but it's not for all people and some are far more tranquil any place you put them.

I've had the pleasure of meeting many such people and you want to hate them for their inner contentment and peace at first. But they're usually too gentle and mellow for that.

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 11:35

ah, but I'm a country girl at heart - I've lived many yrs in cities but am now back nr to where I was born, unbelievably, in a small place not dissimiliar to the one in which I grew up. I like to think I'm therefore neither an incomer nor a naive urbanite, I'm just back where I belong!

expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 11:36

Good on you, then.

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 11:40

but I'm still not a mellow person, just not born that way. It calms me down here though, was even worse before

having moved from NE london to a small town v.near the lake district i can honestly say that i would now find walking down oxford street on the saturday before christmas more tranquil than a walk in the countryside.it gets so boring after a while, somtimes i long for noise and bright lights

Tutter · 23/10/2006 11:45

have just been to living room window to glare at driver of ridiculously loud lamborghini parked outside

nob end

yes, we're in surrey

we're moving soon, hurrah

LiliLaTigresse · 23/10/2006 11:45

I was brought up in a village in France, and as lovely as it was, I have come to the conclusion that I much prefer city life!
I love being able to do so many different things, taking dd to museums, theatre, concerts, restaurants, so easily. As expat says, tranquillity does come from within. I would go mad in the country!

Tutter · 23/10/2006 11:46

think i'm particularly sensitive to noise though as i grew up in a rural area, only the odd sheep baa-ing or the clunk of a log moving about in the fireplace to be heard

SherlockLGJ · 23/10/2006 11:46

I am in Surrey in a small town and it is lovely.

So there.....see nah.

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 11:48

I suppose there's Surrey country and Surrey London (Richmond, staines, kingston etc etc)
Guess you're in the former?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 23/10/2006 11:48

I found London relaxing, tbh.

I like white noise.

Too much quiet drives me potty.

I grew up in the 'burbs.

My experience of kids in the country was that they got into drugs and screwed around for lack of things to do.

SherlockLGJ · 23/10/2006 11:50

Yes it is quite small, the population is only just over 37,000.

Tutter · 23/10/2006 11:51

oh no, rtth, i'm richmond

lots of noisy cars and braying owners

Tutter · 23/10/2006 11:51

ah sorry you were addressing lgj

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 12:01

richmond's nice though and relatively tranquil. not enough for you though tutter, if you're moving?

OP posts:
Tutter · 23/10/2006 12:03

unfortunately we're directly beneath one of heathrow's landing flight paths

noisy cars are a minor irritation; 747s every 90 seconds directly overhead are breakdown-inducing

RanToTheHills · 23/10/2006 12:05

Ikwym! Have lived under a path myself - never again!
I don't understand the "oh you get used to it" brigade. I think such frequent landings cd drive people to insanity!
