I think it's perhaps because people are a lot more gullible nowadays. I think the link below explains it quite well.

Gullible Daily Mail readers?

UCM · 20/10/2006 19:23

B**lox, I have been batted again p

Philomena · 20/10/2006 19:25

I read the Daily Mail, but not because it more closely reflects my views on life. In fact, I read it because it is the opposite to what I believe. In RL I like a good argument and the Daily Mail very satisfactorily gives me the opportunity to complain loudly to myself. I really, really enjoy the outraged feeling that it gives me.

Little things amuse me, I know!

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 20/10/2006 19:25

see, people who buy the guardian piss me off big time

so smug. God you might as well just turn on the Archers and sit down with a mug of horlicks andbe done with it.

So there

I have a friend who is quite liberal and yet always read the DM. It didn't seem to influence her. I think there is a gap in the market for a left of centre paper that is a little lighter to read than the broadsheets but a bit more challenging than the Mirror.

I always felt it's was a bit like a womans mag in that there were lots of articles on shopping and clothes.

Tinker · 20/10/2006 19:41

Some read it for "know your enemy" purposes.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 20/10/2006 19:42

ah, no one went for that one. oh well

the independent is far superior but really, to identify yourself by the paper you read...

BudaBeast · 20/10/2006 19:44

I do!!

Wouldn't say it influenced me in anyway - HATE the Guardian - find it boring boring boring.

it's just something to read!

GhoulsToo · 20/10/2006 19:47

you didn't get the irony then Pruni?

soapbox · 20/10/2006 20:14

Ok - you can all lambast me for getting serious now

Where does this concept come from that we must only read newpapers and other media that is written from our own viewpoint?

Or that people somehow use newspapers for intellectual stimulation?

They are the last place I would go for that - any of them. I read them as I am interested in how other people (writers) perceive the world around us - and the more variety I manage to read the better.

Very few of us read because it is 'worthy' - rather we read because it interests us. Probablt 25% of the books I have ever read have been complete pap - but it doesn't mean I should never have read them.

I think it rather sad actually, if people only read what they perceive others to feel 'suitable' or shy away from reading something because somehow they may be tarnished by it! The mind is a powerful thing, well able to discern what is pap and what is not - but well able to enjoy the pap anyway

I feel even sadder for those that only read particular media because they feel that they are too intellectual to read anything else! They are missing out on a whole range of writing - challenging maybe, but writing nontheless.

Someone mischievously hid a Daily Star in the Library copy of El Pais today causing a lot of chuntering in the staff room.
I enjoy reading the Daily Telegraph because the features are good and it pays to know what the opposition are up to. Also reassures you that even the well-meaning One Nationists are still bonkers and unelectable (sorry JT)

foxinsocks · 20/10/2006 20:18

think the Mail is quite addictive - there are lots of people who are very loyal to it

CountTo10 · 20/10/2006 20:20

I've always thought the daily mail was just a way for the middle upper classes to read crap each day but look like they were reading something high brow as it was a bit more expensive. The DM is an awful paper - its just a thicker version of The Sun - at least The Sun recognises its nothing but a cheap tabloid and revels in it!!!!

CountessDracula · 20/10/2006 20:22

count to 10 I don't think you could have it more wrong most people would rather be seen reading the sport then teh mail i bet

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 20/10/2006 20:23

PMSL - love it, CD

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 20/10/2006 20:25

highbrow?

the mail?

uh, no

what does kind of pee me off is how it is seen as a complete joke...which it is but...its read mainly by women. The star, the sun, etc are full of the same shit, but read by men, and are not subject to the same ridicule.
