I agree Cod. I once read an article that some schools in the US have a totally different approach to teaching boys and it seems to be working. They start school 6 months later than girls and are taught seperatley with no desks or chairs, they are encouraged to wander around, lounge on bean bags etc. Lots more emphasis on building, talking and doing rather than sitting quietly and writing. Makes you think.....

I would give extra points for gel ink use if I were a marker of work. Gel pens rule. Must train my boys to use them properly...

All primary school does for boys is contain them, not teach them. A preponderence of soppy women teachers, all that safety obession and sitting still for hours, don t touch, don t fiddle, do neat handwriting etc.

Just to say, I went with a friend to an open evening last week for a boys school which had been put into special measures and pulled itself back out within 6/9 months. The headteacher was telling us that they had spent a lot of time 'learning' how to teach boys, and a lot of their lessons were really geared up to keep the boys interested. I was impressed as having two dds, I had never really considered the actual differences between the sexes with regard to learning.

my eldest go to single sex selective.The schools have always competed madly. The girls have always had the edge .The last couple f years the boys eeked forward and are now streets ahead. I do thing there is change

Rather than reviewing teaching practises they school you mention, shewhoneverdusts, probably introduced the GNVQ in ICT. A new and fab way to fiddle your league table position.

maybe girls do so well because boys are generally more disruptive? my dd gets so fed up at school with the countless naughty boys in her class. Apparently they stop all the others from learning (her words).

It's because the schools are geared to girls.

In a more physically based leaning system, with an emphasis on teamwork and bravery, you could say there were too many cowardly girls around, holding the boys back.

and maybe some kids should learn that school isn't Disneyland, that some things are dull but tough shit you have to get on with it so you can do more interesting stuff later
