Serenity are you in Oz?

HowsTheSerenity · 15/12/2014 11:06

I am but not in Sydney. Friends work next door to the cafe and were evacuated.
I've stopped reading and watching the news. There are too many cretinous morons playing the anti Islam card tonight. The anti Halal stuff has started too.

differentnameforthis · 15/12/2014 11:17

that tweet you posted was just meaningless, sentimental drivel

Oh do shut up!! Who cares what you think of it, if it helps someone through the rest of today, tonight & the coming days what harm is it doing to anyone?

back off nancy, stop nitpicking everything!

MuttersDarkly · 15/12/2014 11:18

How is that twee?

But I can see where the twee is coming from. Even though it's not the word I'd use.

I am an immigrant. There have been times I have felt vulnerable becuase I stood out like a sore thumb. Some unknown internet random accompanying me would be an additional risk factor becuase the contact would be based on me informing them of my feelings of vulnerbility, my barriers being down in their company, a declared dependency on them and my revelation that I had lack of an available, known support system.

The idea is full of obvious security holes and has the potential to create greater risk.

As a concept it has the potential to allow rascist extremists to create a clean profile, let the campaign identify those individuals who feel vulnerable, gain close quarter access to them in a context of dependancy and make a statement through violence that is bound to generate media attention becuase of the connection to an known interet campaign backfiring.

Equally somebody radicalised, but as yet without a plan, is offered an opportunity of a "barriers down, even forced down should instincts set off alarm bells" random victim on a plate, that would generate a degree of backlash unthinkable had the victim been truely random rather than part of a high profile attempt to show solidarity.

And that is before you consider your common or garden sex pest who would happily have potential victims lined up declaring their vulnerability/barriers down status which blunt their ability to react despite any instincts that end up screaming " danger danger".

Which is why I think few people will paritcipate. Thus it becomes one more self congratualatory, attention seeking "activisim by click" act where the greatest gain is allowing people to feel good about themselves via the huge effort of using a social media hashtag.

Can't believe the bickering on here Confused. Not the right thread for it IMO.

AuntieStella · 15/12/2014 11:26

I think I'd rather see messages of support, even if worded in a way that doesn't please everyone, than messages of Islamaphobia.

differentnameforthis · 15/12/2014 11:29

If you want to moan about 'twee soundbites' why not start a thread of your own, instead of picking at it on a thread where people have friends/family close by the affected area.

have some respect!

MonstrousRatbag · 15/12/2014 11:31

I wish Nancy66 were not right, but she is.

HoHoHappyHolidays · 15/12/2014 11:31

MarshaBrady · 15/12/2014 11:39

Terrifying. Those poor people

Agree with Nancy pointless hashtags

26Point2Miles · 15/12/2014 11:51

I'd call it twee to nancy

Fanfeckintastic · 15/12/2014 12:03

Hostages in Belguim now too?!

Meechimoo · 15/12/2014 12:04

The I'll Ride With You campaign means well, comes from a good place and is supposed to show the world that this is about terrorists not Muslims, but it poses big security risks and is a really bad idea. It's going to potentially attract the wrong sort of attention. If they want a sitting duck target, it's perfect. I hope the hostages get out safely.

MuttersDarkly · 15/12/2014 12:06

Frm the BBC, re belgium

"Local prosecutors said there was no indication of any link to terrorism or jihadist group Islamic State.

"This isn't the same sort of incident as the events in Sydney," spokeswoman Annemie Serlippens said."

Morloth · 15/12/2014 12:15

The thing is. Terrorists throw their nets too wide.

There is nothing I can do to protect myself/family from them. So like car crashes and plane disasters I think 'oh well might as well continue with my day'.

Undirected terror is surely pointless?

WhyYouGottaBeSoRude · 15/12/2014 14:22

I hope that either he gives himself up or that the police or hostages manage to overpower him.

Surely if there's 40 of them and one of him he can't keep a close eye on all of them indefinitely? The gunman is going to get tired soon??

If he is a terrorist it is unlikely he will give up and hand himself over to the police- more likely if he thinks there is no way out he will kill himself and possibly others. If he is wearing a bomb then this is not good.

I also think it would be unlikely and really dangerous for the hostages to try and overpower him. He has a gun, machete and suspected bomb. There were thought to be 13 hostages and 5 have now escaped so although 8 would be able to overpower an unarmed man this is a very different scenario.

I hope he just lets them go and shoots himself. Really dont think he'll hand himself over.

Nancy66 · 15/12/2014 14:28

he appears to be an isolated loon rather than part if isis.

WhyYouGottaBeSoRude · 15/12/2014 14:34

I cant help wondering if that makes it even riskier. A single person acting alone means no political weight so unlikely to be willing or even able to negotiate for release of hostages. Far less likely to have a proper plan of how to carry this out and/or get away, no help to get away. Far more likely to panic and act on impulse rather than stick to an orchestrated plan.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/12/2014 15:01

I've read he's on bail for murder of his ex wife! So sounds like he may have killed someone before which is worrying.

MonstrousRatbag · 15/12/2014 15:07

If he has claimed to be wearing a suicide vest, then no one will risk tackling him I suspect.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/12/2014 15:08

Bbc news just said they thought more people had escaped but not confirmed yet.
