It must be madman season in the US. These are the headlines just in - lock down in Vegas as boy spotted with gun and dead at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. As a Board Member of my sons' school security is going to high on the topic at the next board meeting. This is now ridiculous. The Americans have too much of a never happen in my backyard approach to security.

This was my main concern about moving here too CF. But it's like they never learn. It happens twice in 48 hrs last week and now look. FGS it's driving me mad. They don't think it's an issue - conversation I had last night with friends. It is a huge issue and only seems to be getting worse.

I don't envy you at all

So am I when it comes to guns. I HATE them with a passion too. And my ds's will never ever play guns as long as I have influence over them. Never mind the constitution or Colorado state law that allows you to defend your property and even if you shoot an intruder dead without provocation you'll not be prosecuted. Mad mad world.

5 little girls have now died

Piffle · 03/10/2006 18:10

This story has really upset me
I know every gun incident shooting is bad
But when you see Amish people, avoiding modern life, technology/guns/computers/electricity and tv etc, then for their lives to be invaded by such a tragedy. Then aftr that the massive police presence, the media, the disturbance, their grief being so public, when they are such close knit community people.
Also the manner of those girls, execution style because the perp had a grudge against God FFS?
The mind boggles and I also feel very sorry for the wife and 3 kids the perp left behind.
Deperately sad situation.

I have just been chatting on a US site and the people on there could only talk about school security, not gun laws.

Obviously school security is an issue, but how can they be so blind to the lunacy of arming anyone and everyone with a tool whose only purpose is killing. It's incomprehensible.

One woman just came out with the old 'I don't see why I shouldn't have a gun if I want one' Well, perhaps there's no reason not to have an electric chair at home, but people would think you were a bit odd.

How can they not see this?

ps Apologies for my Halloween nickname in this context.

If I am not wrong...What I really find disturbing is that the free ownership of weapons was only aproved in the 70s-80s, one of the main promoters of this change was a father whose wife and daughter died when a gunman opened fire at the restaurant they were in, he had the idea that if there had been more people with guns in the restaurant, they would have been able to stop the gunman... Doh!

But please excuse me if I get it all wrong, I was very young when this change in law was aproved and I remember to be in shock at them thinking that was going "make America safer"

We're pretty 'plain', although obviously not to the extent of the old-order Amish. (cos I'm a computer, doh!) We get some of our homeschool curriculum from Amish/Mennonite suppliers.

I have been tremendously blessed by their stories and interviews on the news. Their whole way of life started because they were feeling persecution, but that was a long time ago. I'm sure they will be a great support to each other.

prairiemuffin · 04/10/2006 09:54

sorry, that should have been 'fleeing' persecution, although I'm sure they were 'feeling' it too..
