My mum's in trouble... (LOL)

My sister sent me this news story...

BBC 29 Sept

Couple accused of hanging up baby>A couple accused of hanging their baby from a washing line and taking
photos of it have been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty.

Thing is, my mother did this to me and it's always been a family joke. She had an excuse, she'd just got her degree in zooology and wanted to see if her lecturers were right about human babies retaining prehensile grip.

Seems bizarre police have arrested this couple - I'm assuming one of them was ready to catch the baby while another took the photo.

Hmm
edam · 02/10/2006 14:47

Why suspicion, Quootie? Me or the news story?

Have posted the story about my mum before - on some thread about what's the worst thing your parents every did to you.

It doesn't say whether they hung it a la Edam's parents, or whether they hung it up by pegs.

SpookyQuootiepie · 02/10/2006 14:49

Dunno ! I guess im abit sensitive towards babies ATM. im 1/2 1/2

intergalacticwalrus · 02/10/2006 14:49

Have to admit to laughing when DP told me about this yesterday. In a slightly horrified way, of course

edam · 02/10/2006 14:53

I don't think you could hold a baby up by pegs, wouldn't support its weight, surely? If the baby had been injured in any way, presumably the story would say so. I was just struck by the fact soemone else has been done for behaviour my mother has always thought was perfectly reasonable!

I suppose it depends on what sort of 'hanging'. Hanging as in with pegs ? Hanging by hands as with edam for the 'grip experiment' or 'hanging' as in tied ????

Reminds me of those very twee baby in plant pot photos that some people think are cute

SpookyQuootiepie · 02/10/2006 14:57

my DS has had a photo done where he was put in a plant pot Very naff

beckybrastraps · 02/10/2006 14:57

But hanging them over a loo door is fine....

Mercy · 02/10/2006 14:58

Edam, so what was the result of your mum's experiment?

lemonaid · 02/10/2006 15:03

An old-school HV friend of my MIL's had told me you could do this but that they tended not to tell new mothers that. I was always curious to know, when we finally had DS, whether it would really work. Sounds like these two took that curiosity just a liiitle bit further. (Suspect if they can pull in enough expert testimony they should get off)

rustybear · 02/10/2006 15:13

How about this?

edam · 02/10/2006 18:18

Mercy, she was right, I could support my own weight (apparently). She says 'I would have caught you if you'd fallen'. Oh, great, so that's all right then, thanks Mother!

Rustybear that is priceless! Edam, my DH was always doing this when ds was small, but months old rather than weeks, but I think he always held on to him i.e. I don't think he ever let DS take his own weight. I could never get the washing out in peace.

Lordy, lordy, all these years I've assumed my mother was the only one person daft enough to do this.

I didn't try it with ds, btw, mainly because we didn't actually have a washing line.
