His family will be in mourning and I did feel sorry for him when some of his own church members disowned him.

A man who for most of his life only said 'yes' in public at his wedding. I remember a work colleague about 20 years ago who went into his Catholic church hall after mass one day, sat down, saw a bowl of lavender and dried flowers, picked them up and moved them to the next table, saying in a loud voice 'we'll have no pot-pourri here'.

saoirse31 · 14/09/2014 00:08

My problem with him is that in his speeches he incited violence etc to be carried out by others... while he was safe and personally protected. not much decency there .

MexicanSpringtime · 14/09/2014 00:13

if there ever was a single person responsible for the outbreak of the Troubles, it was him

Totally agree, he was horrendous, and I'm from the protestant community for my sins.

saoirse31 · 14/09/2014 00:13

And I have no probl with saying he should rest in peace, his family loved him.. and eventually he made contribution to peace process ... but... its maybe easy to spout bigoted crap which inflames others while remaining 'blameless'. But its not decent to do that.

feathermucker · 14/09/2014 00:20

When someone has spent their life spreading bigotry and dividing a nation as he did, it isn't RIP.

Some people simply don't deserve that courtesy Hmm

AgentProvocateur · 14/09/2014 00:22

No great loss.

mathanxiety · 14/09/2014 01:09

There is no excuse for what he did.
He caused nothing but misery, for everyone in NI, for two whole generations. He led his own followers astray and he dehumanised those he hated (and he did hate. There is no other word for it). Not for nothing was he awarded an honourary degree from Bob Jones University.

The blunt truth about him and his career should not be airbrushed away just because he is now dead.

CaptChaos · 14/09/2014 16:53

Good.

Just need those murderous touts Adams and McGuinness to go as well and NI will have rid herself of the aim cancer causing agents.

John Hume was looking well at Albert Reynolds' funeral (from what I could see on telly, anyway).

Hopefully he will be with us for a long time to come, but when he does go, there will be a genuine outpouring of grief from all sides. Which is more then you can say for most NI politicians, past or present.
