This story has really riled me.

If it were a male commander would it be on the evening news?? It hasn't even been confirmed. She is single and it is not forbidden to have relationships with navy colleagues. Where is the news in this??

Actually, you are forbidden to have sexual relations within the direct line of command. The military is a big place, and one/both person should request a transfer and this can happen without necessarily being career limiting.

It's not been an automatic sacking offence since (I think) the 1980s. But as integrity of the chain of command is militarily significant, it is a disciplinary issue (for both sexes).

The press does not usually report on such cases though.

Ok, I get that, but it's the whole "look, women can't be trusted" angle they are going for.

It is vile misogyny - I know of one or 2 male COs who have had affairs with junior officers and it is not remarked on at all.

SWYM, Cannula.

I'd always put that down to a form of nepotism though. Some men do get the book thrown at them, others seem to be on an untouchable 'golden track'.

Be interesting to know how many male commanders of a warship have "left their ships" because of inappropriate relationships: or are we to assume that none has ever breached the rules? Or is it that they simply "leave their ships" and no one ever things of splashing it all across the BBC and other media?

Answers on a postcard.
