How on earth does he think this will work? The mind boggles...

There appears to be some talk of docking child benefit from parents of truants

"The Mail has told how he is drawing up plans to dock child benefit from parents of truants."

The reporting elsewhere doesn't just affect those whose children truant. It's not just addressing the 'turn up' part but that those children are also 'ready to learn' and 'respect the teacher'. How does he propose addressing behaviour issues or disengagement from learning, in a manor that 'punishes' parents? How exactly is cutting CB going to help address behaviour issues and/or disengagement? There is no logic to that suggestion, and the 'punishment of parents' element of the measures he's proposing haven't actually been spelled out. Which does make it all sound like a brain fart at best...

I agree it's punishment and plain mean rather than helpful.

Is this all a distraction from his row with the other cabinet minister, who was it, Theresa May?

BehindLockNumberNine · 07/06/2014 13:31

Gove, for example, is a twat!!

Goblinchild · 07/06/2014 13:34

I like the fact he's put his cards on the table, and I hope that all the parents who usually blame teachers and schools for this sort of nonsense will bloody well remember where these diktats come from.
I hope he takes the flak.
I wish most parents had memories longer than those of a small furry animal.
Few schools initiate all the holiday/lunchbox/walk to school/water ideas. they just respond to pressures from above and below and from all sides.

TucsonGirl · 07/06/2014 15:06

Seems reasonable enough to me tbh. Why should parents get child benefit when they can't be bothered to parent?

Icimoi · 07/06/2014 18:45

The whole thing is utterly ludicrous. How does he propose to distinguish children who appear to misbehave due to learning difficulties? What sort of appeal procedure would there be for the parents of those children whose learning difficulties haven't been properly recognised? How do you deal with issues such as children who get bullied into going along with the disruptive ones, or who are wrongly accused of misbehaving?

And, if he really wants to drive up achievement and standards, how about putting in the investment to allow for smaller class sizes?

I'm perfectly sure Gove knows full well that the whole thing is a non-starter, he's just coming up with nonsense that he thinks will appeal to Daily Mail readers.

Tucsongirl whilst I agree with your sentiment broadly, it is too simplistic to assume that all cases of truancy and bad behaviour are due to bad parenting.
