Why do the media insist on glorifying violent criminals like this?

Yeah, they need to tone it down a bit.

'The Nutcracker' sounds suite, but doubt if we'd get a demi plie out of that dude.

LoveSardines · 06/05/2014 20:47

yy this is just weird

the BBC calling him that even

it's not CSI FFS

PennySillin · 06/05/2014 20:48

I thought that too while driving to school this morning! Is it really necessary?

It's just incredible - why do they do that, it's not as if it's a nickname we're all familiar with from the time of the crimes or the investigation

claig · 06/05/2014 21:05

That is his nickname, but I can see why the media uses that term, because it highlights the lunacy of putting such a dangerous man in an open prison and therefore throws a real light on what is happening and begs the question why is it happening.

The term 'skull cracker' rather than his real name makes the public sit up and ask what is going on.

Costacoffeeplease · 06/05/2014 21:07

That's not the impression I get it all - a brief description of his crimes makes it all too clear what type of criminal he is - and they gave that as well as the nickname

claig · 06/05/2014 21:09

Yes, but the public remembers "skull cracker" and every mention of that term on radio or TV puts pressure on the authorities to explain why he was in an open prison. He is an armed robber, but "skull cracker" spells out the violence involved.

LoveSardines · 06/05/2014 21:15

yes quite costa it's not a familiar nickname

it's all highly peculiar. i've not really seen this before, i wonder why it is a "thing" with this particular man

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 06/05/2014 21:18

Michael Wheatley

In case anyone was trying to remember.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 07/05/2014 13:36

Can we have a non DM link, please?

claig · 07/05/2014 13:45

I don't know if it is Skull Cracker or not, but some people think it may be him

Here's a BBC story on Michael Wheatley. There was an attack on a building society in Sunbury-on-Thames this morning. Police have not exactly said that he is a suspect, but are investigating the possibility.

scaevola · 07/05/2014 15:13

BBC reporting that he is in custody

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 07/05/2014 15:46

Good. Doubt he'll be going back to an open prison now. Hope no one was harmed while he was at large.

Isitmebut · 07/05/2014 16:30

Looking at the picture on the BBC website (not currently on that link), it was probably the Fashion Police that finally tracked him down.
