DD is quite upset at its "demotion". Her two Space books are now out of date, as is the Solar System chart we bought for her wall just two weeks ago.

It's weird to have something you were taught at school taken away like that.

And have a look here

if you are still a Pluto fan!

I was quite miffed too - It seems really mean!

southeastastra · 25/08/2006 11:47

UnquietDad · 25/08/2006 11:49

the backlash starts here!

I love the fact it was named by a 10-year-old girl...but having watched a programme recently as to wether it is technically still a planet, I will admit to waivering...
No! on balance, you can't demote a planet - Pluto rocks! (coldly )

lionheart · 25/08/2006 15:21

I am a bit miffed, too.

TitianRed · 25/08/2006 15:24

Going to have to come up with a new mnemonic for my class as 'My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets' won't cut the mustard any more!! RIP Pluto

nikkie · 25/08/2006 21:02

guess schools will have to teach the 3 new ones too

suejonez · 25/08/2006 21:02

I alwys used to get him mixed up with goofy

ledodgyrobespierre · 25/08/2006 21:07

I was going to come on here saying exactly the same as Sue (only I wasn't joking I thought that was what the thread was about [thick emoticon].

Well, you're sort of right milliec. It orbits the Sun, but it doesn't have an "unimpeded" orbit, which is one of the reasons it has been demoted. It also has a large moon called Charon , which orbits it.

my first thought was him too

aDAdOnMumsnet · 01/09/2006 10:59

I too miss Pluto, there was something cute about it!

But i guess this is like pretty much all aspects of science, geography, discovery, medicine etc, in that discoveries are made and taken as being set in stone only for another discovery or theory to be made years later which rubbishes it. Just think how gutted those people would have been when it became pretty established that the earth was round and not flat.

So sadly, pluto is history.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2006 11:02

Pluto is weak.

MarsLady · 01/09/2006 11:04

I still love Pluto... the planet and the dog!

UnquietDad · 01/09/2006 11:07

I'd be surprised if the ruling isn't challenged in a few years. There are enough astronomers who disagree and who abstained this time.

here's hoping

SaintGeorgeMarple · 01/09/2006 11:50

I thought the final decision hadn't been made yet, since they can't agree on the definition of a planet to begin with. The IAU are supposed to be announcing a decision in September.

Either way, the new definition will probably mean either losing Pluto or gaining a whole mass of other planets.

The planet count could change from 9 to 8 - or even to 20!

Callisto · 01/09/2006 12:20

As a fellow heavenly body, Pluto is definitely on my buddy list.;)

Well I never thought I would see the day when something so important changed in this way! Could understand it more if they found some new ones, but to 'loose' one. My world will never be the same again.

lilymum · 02/09/2006 17:14

No, about time it's status was reassessed, it just doesn't begin to compare in terms of complexity and interest to the other planets. Give me Jupiter anytime!
