Storms, so is there ever any danger then?

Well, obviously there is because this article about the storms says

"In Kidderminster, Worcestershire, a mother and her one-year-old baby were flung three metres across a bedroom when their house was struck by lightning. Kate Saunders, 26, was stripping wallpaper when the lightning hit her roof yesterday. "It sounded like a bomb blast," she said."

So, should we be scared or is this very rare? How does lightning throw someone across a room? I am a total dunce in this area, obv, but as I type there is a huge loud storm raging outside.

a lightning strike blew the top off a house a couple of streets away from mine recently

It blew up their TV as well.

Better put your wellies and marigolds on WWW

and yes the storm is nearly over my house now

BettySpaghetti · 19/08/2006 17:09

All I know is that we've had a modem and an aerial socket for the TV blow up on us during thunder storms. When the aerial was struck I was in the house and it scared the living cr@p out of me! Really loud bang. I've been nervous of storms ever since.

(Funnily enough we also live in Worcestershire)

hmmm think I'd better log off now

BettySpaghetti · 19/08/2006 17:12

We've got a laptop now but I'm stil not sure if its OK to use it during storms -presumably its OK when used in wireless mode? Bit nervous after past experiences as you can tell !

WideWebWitch · 19/08/2006 17:18

Iota, it's moved away from me towards you by the sound of it. So, they are dangerous then? The roof could blow off? Blimey, scary.

Thundering here now.

Tortington · 19/08/2006 18:14

my dh is petrified that thunderstorms will blw up the computer its the only time the thing is ever switched off - the world would end if he coulnt play with his wizards you know - i shouldnt mock - but its too easy!

Years ago, Dh put in an offer on a house then ahd our mortgage refused (due to house, not us). Three days after we moved into the house we did buy, the roof of the first one was blown up in thunder.

we had the bad storms a few days ago, don't remember anything like it- about 8 hours of thundering. No dmage though, but Dh spent most of his night shift watching cribbs Causeway being struck repeatedly- apparently very beautiful.

I man- ! there are shoes in there man!

phew - well that was quite a storm - over an inch of rain.

Still gave me a chance to spend quality time with the kids making choc chip cookies and home-made chicken nuggets.

WWW - Whole roof didn't blow off the neighbours, only the top couple of feet. I'm a little bit wary as my house is the same design.

You need to get surge protectors on any wires going into your pc/laptop including the phone line. Lightening strike fried my pc a few years ago through the phone line. If you're wireless it will fry the router.
