When my mum was 43/44 her NHS gyne was telling her that if she wanted another child she'd better get on with it now. When she had had her first, at age 29, she was considered 'elderly' for a first-timer.

She had were PPH with her first, and placenta praevia with her third - neither of which are age-related AFAIK.

However, she had to have major surgery in her late 60s to repair severe prolapses in her rectum, caused, according to her surgeon, by pushing out three babies while lying on her back. Perhaps the cost to the NHS is less age-related but more quality-of-care-related? Fortunately we've benefited by better knowledge and organisations like the NCT and Active Birth.

I was 30 when I had dd and I had eclampsia. I never thought of 30 as old until I was pg and then everytime I went for checkup they kept referring to me as older. I am now 35 and have been trying for another for many years but am also aware of the problems us "elderly prims" have.
