Sorry think it might have been United Airlines, not American

Oh god. Scary. I read somewhere about a flight being turned back to Heathrow on Sunday because a mobile phone went off. It didn't apparently belong to any of the passengers. It was deemed safe enough to carry on, but the Captain turned back just in case.

carrying a screwdriver vaseline and matches
[sigh]

Uwila · 16/08/2006 16:22

Yikes....

Am considering purchasing a plane ticket from London to Chicago for an October flight. These things don't exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

FoghornLeghorn · 16/08/2006 16:23

How on earth would that happen with all the extra security measures that are meant to be in place ? .
DB was meant to be flying on Friday with United Airlines, the exact flight that they were supposed to be detonating the bombs on today - they have decided to cancel, just feel its not worth the risk.

I suppose matches and vaseline wouldn't be picked up on the scan.

chocybickie · 16/08/2006 16:32

its amazing that after all those reporters smuggling in screwdrivers, the intense security checks etc that she still managed to get it on board.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2006 16:39

how the hell did she get a screwdriver on?

wtf?

they make you practically strip off and this gal gets a damn screwdriver on!?

they took my dad's lighter off him when he flew over before he'd stopped smoking.

he'd forgot not to bring it.

but matches are okay.

how whacked it all is.

bugger flying.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2006 16:57

ooops!!

My vicar was just telling me about this story too - shocking really!

twinsetandpearls · 16/08/2006 16:59

On the news today they have been reporting of a boy who got onto a flight without a ticket.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2006 17:00

TAP - that's what my link is about!

twinsetandpearls · 16/08/2006 17:00

sorry HRHQueenOfQuotes didn't see your link!

chocybickie · 16/08/2006 17:01

"How can a 12-year-old boy pass through all of this supposed security during this current state of affairs and nobody thinks there?s anything odd about it? It?s amazing"

yeah.. its more amazing that you can't keep tabs on your 12 year old step son. why on earth does he keep on running off??

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 16/08/2006 17:02

chocy - if you read the article you'll see he wasn't living with his parents - he was at a care home bbc story and has runaway before - getting as far as Devon from where he lives in Cumbria.

chocybickie · 16/08/2006 17:05

unbelievable.
but my thoughts on that story are nothing to do with airport security. so i'll shut up.

Piffle · 16/08/2006 17:05

yes but at least he went through full screening
err except the bit in the screening where they check your tickets that is.
Thanks god the plane crew do headcounts and list tickoffs

Piffle · 16/08/2006 18:20

typical sky news
now it was just a lady with claustrophobia flipping out...

nikkie · 16/08/2006 20:13

Just had to check that boy- I used to work at a care home in Cumbria, wasn't that one though!

Blondilocks · 16/08/2006 20:30

They seemed to be very strict when we flew to Spain & this was before the plot was uncovered.

A couple in front of us had their tent pegs confiscated. Am sure that their first night of camping was fun!! (Although it is clear that sharp items will be removed so it possibly would have been worth checking about tent pegs!)
