Am shocked that Edinburgh and Glasgow came ahead of London!

Earlybird · 17/08/2006 04:17

expat - just curious, why was it so dire? I thought Colorado was supposed to be a dream location...

Alibaldi · 17/08/2006 04:34

Colorado is a dream location I should know and I'm sure Expat is jealous that I'm here. However, I think she meant life was dire - stresswise with high-powered job, hours in a car and very little life other than work. Expat you should come to Boulder, buy in Erie then you've a smaller commute. We'd love to see you here. I don't miss Scotland at all, friends yes, Fife no.

expatinscotland · 17/08/2006 09:27

Ali,
Erie brings back memories. Of the kind. But good ones, nonetheless!

I was working as a paralegal for a high profile securities company in Denver, Early. 70+ hour weeks were fairly common.

Ali, I loved Boulder, BUT, really can't take those long work weeks and paltry holiday time now that I have kids.

Also the health insurance tied to your job stuff.

I took unpaid holiday to pursue our climbing interests whilst in the US. But my ex h also had a lucrative job to cover my lost income when we went away. He worked as a contract engineer who could leave a fair amount of space between jobs and pursue his climbing that way.

CountessDracula · 18/08/2006 18:28

ooh uwila how heartless can you be??

Did you really not feel sorry for me when:

DD was in hospital with suspected meningitis
I had glandular fever AND shingles and dh did his back in so he couldn't walk for a week
dd went purple
the dog got cancer

I am shocked

NomDePlume · 18/08/2006 18:48

Sue - It isn't about house prices. It is an affordability survey.

Blu · 18/08/2006 19:10

But the way they have worked it out is a bit back to front isn't it? It sounds as if the average wage is lower in Cardiff, rather than bills higher?
And this:
"However, although Londoners pay out most each month - £1,338 - their average monthly income of £1,809 puts their relative cost of living behind Leeds, Southampton, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and Manchester." That 'average' will include all the super-super rich people who live in London, whilst many many 'average' Londoners are not actually pulling in inflated incomes at all. But still paying out the highest amount each month, wherever they fall on the income scale.

Having moved from Somerset to a small town 20 minutes from Cardiff I can see what the difference is: house prices are a bit cheaper here (though rapidly catching up- gone from about a £30k to £5k difference) but if Dh took a job here, something he'd love as he hates commuting, his wages would drop to £14.5K as that is what a middle manager /administrator earns here. I mean, that's pitiful!
