remember that last CCTV footage of him skipping across the yard in front of Peckham Library and then a few minutes later......

bundle · 09/08/2006 15:20

about time. Apparently these boys were absolute hardened thugs and had string of convictions for assault, wounding etc etc.....

so glad for his poor parents that at last they can know justice - of a kind - has been finally done. Although it will never bring that poor little boy back.

winnie · 10/08/2006 02:44

I too am glad that justice has been done.
I cannot imagine what that poor child went through or what his family have been through since

Have to say however that commiting such a crime at 12 & 13 I do wonder at how society has let down the children who killed him too.

Alibaldi · 10/08/2006 02:56

Finally finally, may he rest in peace. Those poor parents will now get closure and be able to move on with life.

DominiConnor · 10/08/2006 10:29

If it is justice, then I'm happy too.
I wish I was 100% that this was was done.

The police don't really take as much interest in the murder of black people, and when this got embarassing, they found that their lack of action had made it very hard to find the murderers.

Since the media (but not the government) was giving them grief, they tried to fit various people up.
Witnesses in earlier trials admitted that the authorities had offered them bribes.

So now all we know is that either the police fabricated the case more skillfully this time, or maybe by luck they happened to get the right people.

MarsLady · 10/08/2006 10:39

DC... apparently it was the forensic evidence that brought the conviction about.

I agree, the police don't seem hugely bothered by the murders of black people, otherwise why would we keep seeing these high profile cases... or at least they become high profile after a period of inactivity.

I pray that Damilola's family can now grieve in peace for their son.

I hope, but don't hold out much hope, that the police etc wake up and get their act together. Too many deaths in custody, murders ignored and evidence ignored imo. Just praying for the day when justice can be done for all of them (black, white and indifferent)

oliveoil · 10/08/2006 10:46

I disagree actually, I think there is more coverage of racist murders when the victim is black or asian. There was a white man murdered in similar circs and nothing in the papers.

bundle · 10/08/2006 10:47

similar circumstances to what olive?

OP posts:
MarsLady · 10/08/2006 10:48

It's about the police reaction or lack thereof oliveoil, not the fact of the reporting.

oliveoil · 10/08/2006 10:48

a racist attack

anyway, I am sure I will be accused of being racist so I will get back to Gordon Ramsey and his pigs.

xx

MarsLady · 10/08/2006 10:50

no one will accuse you of that oliveoil. We are all entitled to our opinions. Our opinions change and develop because of the knowledge that we gain.

Trust me. I won't accuse you of racism.

CaligulaCorday · 10/08/2006 10:57

I don't agree either. The police were extremely bothered about this murder, it was high profile and political right from the start, they did their level best to find the killer and were in despair about the "bromley" trial collapsing. The fact is, the community around those boys kept stum and refused to co-operate with the police (or perhaps they were afraid). Damilola's parents (who are astoundingly and movingly dignified but no pushovers) have been very clear that they don't have a complaint with the way the investigations were handled. This is not another Stephen Lawrence scenario.

bundle · 10/08/2006 11:01

but olive, this wasn't an attack on a black man, Damilola was a little boy, that's why it received so much attention..and because of the poignant cctv footage of him at the library

I think OlliveOil's right, there is mre coverage of black people being murdered. It's two stories for the price of one. As in another thread, it is the case that getting good stories is hard work for journos.
Thus when it turns out the police haven't bothered to properly investigatge a black person's death, it's easy work.
Thne sad fact is that a journo knows to look lack of priority, of as in the Lawrence case such screwups that no one really can measure the ratio of corruption, incompetence and racism.
