Three charged with taking discarded food from a skip

Story here:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/jan/28/three-charged-vagrancy-act-food-skip-iceland

As the food had been thrown away (and therefore didn't belong to anyone) they've been charged under an early 19th. century law on vagrancy. I find it hard to believe that there is any real public interest in pursuing this case.

So the CPS thinks there's significant public interest in prosecuting them? Only if you want to prove how much food gets wasted.

telsa · 29/01/2014 10:34

appalling!

AgaPanthers · 29/01/2014 13:10

Iceland's statement saying this has nothing whatsoever to do with them:

t.co/Z51mv1YqFP

It is pretty shocking tbh. Who is the fucking victim here?

There are so many crimes in this country that go unprosecuted, why the fuck are they wasting their time on this?

Custardo · 29/01/2014 13:12

they are wasting their time because if poor people who can't afford to eat go skip diving instead of buying from a supermarket, the supermarket will lose out

its a country built in favour of businesses imo

would be interesting to find out if Iceland contribute to any particular political party

AgaPanthers · 29/01/2014 13:55

uh, did you read Iceland's statement? Because your post doesn't make any sense if you did.

MillyMollyMama · 29/01/2014 14:31

Iceland have not asked for this prosecution. It is just another example of the Police and prosecution service doing the easy stuff and failing with more important issues. Let's hope it gets dismissed.

It looks like the charges have been dropped:

metro.co.uk/2014/01/29/charges-dropped-against-three-men-who-took-food-from-iceland-skip-4282480/

Personally, I'm amazed they were ever considered.

Didn't somebody say that the store is right next to a police station? At the very least it's trespassing. You can't call yourself a decent policeman in this society if you're not prosecuting the downtrodden and unwashed for something.

The CPS should be ashamed of itself for dropping the charges. Bring back transportation and public flogging, I say.

anchovies · 30/01/2014 11:24

These are freegans not people genuinely in need of food because they are homeless/can't feed their children or whatever. One of the blokes I know comes from an extremely wealthy background and certainly doesn't need the food he stole.

nennypops · 30/01/2014 14:54

Utterly ludicrous that they were charged under the Vagrancy Act, and utterly ludicrous that the charge of being a "rogue and vagabond" still exists in this day and age.

Hassled · 30/01/2014 14:59

Iceland have come out of this pretty well, I think. It's baffling as to why they were ever charged.

SomethingOnce · 30/01/2014 23:07

Hahahaha. Seriously?

This reminds me of people I knew getting shouted at by a supermarket employee to "Stop stealing our rubbish!".
