He stopped smoking 23 years ago, his book helped me stop 10 years ago and now he has lung cancer. Her used to smoke 100 a day apparently.

Is his former smoking habit to blame even though he gave up 23 years ago?

Poor bugger.

Oh no. Are you SURE though, this rumour does the rounds every now and again and has never been true before when I've heard it.

spidermama · 30/07/2006 13:00

WWW Radio Fi8ve live have been running it in their bulletins all morning. I can't find it on the BBC News website yet though.

ok, found a story, it isn't just a rumour BUT he'd have been dead YEARS ago had he not given up when he was 50, well, that's what he said in his books and I can see his point.

Here's the PA copy ...

Allen Carr - the man who has convinced millions of people to give up smoking - has been diagnosed with lung cancer, it was announced today.

Mr Carr, 73, used to go through 100 cigarettes a day but stopped smoking 23 years ago.

Since then, he has built a global empire on teaching people how to quit. His books have become best-sellers and he runs clinics around the world.

Celebrities such as Charlotte Church, Sir Richard Branson, Ruby Wax and Sir Anthony Hopkins are among those who have resorted to his techniques to give up.

The anti-smoking guru, who is married and has four children and 11 grandchildren, was diagnosed last week and is coming to terms with his illness.

A spokesman for Mr Carr said: "It is not possible to tell if Allen's cancer is linked to his previous 100 cigarette a day addiction.

"Allen has spent many years in smoke-filled rooms since he quit, whilst treating smokers for their addiction.

"He is certain that had he not quit, he would have been dead 20 years ago. He remains in high spirits and sees this latest stage in his remarkable life as an opportunity to make his method even more recognised and widely available."

Mr Carr added: "Since I stopped smoking more than 23 years ago I have been the happiest man in the world - I still feel the same way."

The accountant turned anti-smoking expert developed his Easyway method of giving up smoking in 1983 and set up a clinic in south west London.

He went on to expand his empire and has established 70 clinics in 30 countries which treated 45,000 people last year.

Aside from his tips on how to give up smoking, Mr Carr has moved on to issuing advice on how to stop drinking and lose weight.

Poor man. Very sad for anyone who gets lung cancer because survival rate is not good. His book does say he used to smoke to extremes.

WideWebWitch · 30/07/2006 13:03

How awful. I gave up using the book too and still have my dad's copy (he died of lung cancer in 2001, aged 59) with "I will never smoke another cigarette again" underlined.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/07/2006 13:06

lung cancer is a shit way to go, but 73= not bad really. Non smokers get cancer every day after all.

has charlotte c given up then?

burstingbug · 30/07/2006 13:07

My dh gave up after reading his book, dh smoked for half his life - 16 long years. Gave up 2 mths b4 ds was born, never smoked since - 19mths so far!

DollyP · 31/07/2006 10:16

Poor Allen, used his book and now off fags for nearly 7 years. DH (hard living all smoking journo) stopped about 4 years ago and has never relapsed. All thanks to Allen. Poor man

expatinscotland · 31/07/2006 10:26

100 fags a day?!

What did he used to do for a living that he had time to smoke that much?

Cor!

Sad he's ill, though.
