Firstly, it is always sad to hear someone has died at a relatively young age. Though not a regular 'Guardian' reader, I agree with you about his columns. Sharp humour, well applied, is a great deflator of politicians.

Rooble · 06/01/2014 12:20

I liked his writing and I liked him on the News Quiz (which I can't bear/be bothered to listen to any longer). I wasn't aware he was ill, so was particularly sad to read he had died.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 06/01/2014 12:23

He didn't want it known publicly that he was ill - he was diagnosed over 3 years ago. Pancreatic cancer, same as Steve Jobs & Patrick Swayze - hard to detect until it's too late (like ovarian)

I really enjoyed his writing too, Lucy, & am very sad that he's died.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 06/01/2014 12:26

'Referring to his time at the helm of the News Quiz, his Radio 4 colleague Corrie Corfield also paid tribute: "Like to think that somewhere rather special Simon Hoggart is now being told to get a move on by Alan Coren, with lovely Linda Smith laughing."'

Oh yes - lovely notion Smile

eddiemairswife · 06/01/2014 12:29

I'm sad too. I wondered why his column wasn't in Saturday's paper. Had no idea he was ill; it's quite a shock.

HumphreyCobbler · 06/01/2014 12:33

I am also really sad to hear this.

He was brilliant on the News Quiz

PrincessFiorimonde · 06/01/2014 13:08

Yes, sad news. I particularly liked his Saturday column in the Guardian; when it wasn't in last Saturday's, I just thought he must be away.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 06/01/2014 13:34

There hasn't been a Saturday one for a few weeks, Princess - I wondered why but also assumed holiday or something. It was always one of my favourite bits. Shame he won't know how much we'll miss him

Bloodybridget · 06/01/2014 13:36

I'm very sad too that he has died, and it's a shock given his illness wasn't generally known about. He was such a name-dropper, wasn't he? But very funny.

nennypops · 06/01/2014 15:57

I can only echo what everyone else has said. I enjoyed his columns, thought he was excellent on The News Quiz, and I'm very sad he's died. Somewhere I've got a CD of selections from the Hoggart/Coren/Smith era of TNQ, I'll have to get it out.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/01/2014 18:08

I'm actually really sad that he's died, a mixture of him being relatively young, and not knowing that he was ill. I liked his writing - found it amusing and, tbf, sometimes irritating with all the name dropping, but always entertaining. I loved his Round Robin compilations.

OneHolyCow · 06/01/2014 18:10

I had missed him too on the Saturdays, thought he had a holiday or some time off.. sad to find out he was so ill. Great column.

ArgyMargy · 06/01/2014 18:11

Same here - thought he was away or something. I really liked his Saturday column, the round robins and the "Barry Cryer on the blower" jokes. He seemed to get around a lot for someone who was so ill.

RIP, he wrote some very funny books
