my first thought was she must have money behind her to spend all say with her child doing lovely things instead of having to work herself and send the kids to school

anyone know the background here, am imagining a man working 70 hrs a week to facilitate her lifestyle

You don't need loads of money to unschool. We do it on a very limited budget, go to the library or museum a lot, spend time with friends, go for walks or home ed groups... all you need really is time! Having said that, we don't have a fancy car and haven't been on holiday in ages. It's all about the choices you make.

We home ed and are very much working poor. DH is on barely 20k a year so certainly not rich! I work part time mainly in the evenings so it doesn't impact on DD's education at all.
I know loads of home edders and most are not rich or supported by high earning husbands. Most get by the best they can, fitting bits of work around everything else and sacrificing a lot of other things in the process.

I wonder if there's any home educated people around on MN to share their experiences, that would be interesting.

I'd love to have done it but I would have been too scared of failing dc's.

It does sound idyllic in some ways though. And good luck to those that have succeeded :)

Monty, there are loads of us :)
Pop over to the home ed section and have a gander.

Being scared of failing the DCs never quite leaves you, I'm afraid! But I have one DD who's only a couple of weeks off 18 who seems to have turned out OK, though I say so myself - doing well in A levels now at college, holding down a part time job where they seem to keep promoting her, and generally being happy and normal.

Interestingly she hasn't yet decided whether she will home ed her own DCs. She thinks she might but is keeping an open mind.
