Just seen the news ...heatwave going to hit us...any hints on how to keep a 5 month old cool. Also - breastfeeding...would you recommend slightly chilling some expressed milk? Or is that a no go for their tummies?

Mine is in her nappy with the fan blowing. Don't think you need to give her cool breastmilk.

May need feeding a little more often. Most of us when it is hot, i think, prefer to drink more but take smaller meals more often.

apparently it is better to take fluid at body temperature when it is hot. This is because if you drink really cold stuff then your body will actually try to warm it up.

so being breastfed is the perfect way to keep cool

ive just put my overheated 5yr old in the shower and put it on lukewarm...hopefully after half an hour he might want to have a sleep...then its my turn...bliss

Keep them hydrated - if you're finding that BFing is making you both hot, you can also give cooled boiled water.

Don't give water, don't do anything other than stay in the shade, wear minimal clothing and bfeed a bit more often than usual. Don't be surprised if your baby wants to feed for shorter periods more often - s/he may be quenching thirst rather than hunger.

Don't arse about with chilling bmilk either - no need.

DS keeps being slung in a paddling pool (is 10 months) (ds, not the pool) when the heat starts making him grumpy...

Saw on gmtv today that if you freeze some water in a palstic bottle (leaving a gap to allow for expansion) then stand this in front of a fan it cools the air that that is blown rather than just blowing hot air.
