shooting, stabbing and burning the Syrian people does not warrant action but the use of chemical weapons does?

We now have a responsibility according to William Hague.

This chequered morality confuses me.

The West has always drawnup borders in order to place clashing ethnicities, tribes or religion within the same borders so that they can play one side off against the other and still maintain their influence.

They are then able to fund, arm, train and stir uo one side against the other when it suits their geopolitical aims.

This is about geopolitics, gas and oil, and the religious divide is just used to stir up the conflict.

For more than a hundred years, the use of chemical weapons has been considered to break the laws of war. The trenches. The holocaust. Chemical weapons are a particular horror and there is good reason for why they receive special treatment in international law.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to believe the use of force is an ineffective or inappropriate response to a violation of the convention, but I think it's an indefensible position to say that until we prohibit all use of arms, we should not prohibit the use of chemical weapons. They are too awful and too amenable to mass use.

Now the west is going to suffer due to their meddling with the ME

Wonders will never cease though at the taliban and the USA working together on one war and blow each other up in another simultaneously

I actually feel proud of parliament today.
I don't see why it should come as such a shock to Dave. He is obviously very out of touch with how most people feel about this issue.

HorryIsUpduffed · 30/08/2013 18:31

I dunno. For the sake of the "special relationship" and international standing he had to ask. He might have been as relieved as the rest of us that it didn't go through.

The problem is we look at this with the eyes tarnished by the lies & secrecy of Iraq.
The UN action will be vetoed by Russia and china. The Assad regime is financed by Russia, can we afford (and what's the likelihood) of winning a war against them?

Something needs to be done, but more thought and information needs to be given. At least wait for the full report.
It would be wonderful for the other middle eastern countries to stand up against these aborhant actions, instead of ignoring it.

Well Dave's just had his nose put out of joint as he can see his BF skipping off to fight with the French now.

SDhopeful · 31/08/2013 08:47

thismousebites completely agree. we were away this week so not following the news, but when DS rad on twitter that parliament voted against the strikes, for the first time ever I felt it had a bit of backbone. never had any time for Dc, but this 'standing shoulder to shoulder' with Obama, TB mini-me is utterly nauseating - aggression will solve nothing - just posturing and saving Obama's face for his stupid 'red-line' challenge.
