Why is more not done to prevent this sort of thing from happening?? He had the whole world ahead of him.

Surprised no one else has started a thread on this story!

Horrible and more should be done to protect people online. Also more information and especially parents should be made aware of the dangers, but also the good sides of the internet.

It's a cyber world and like in the real world you shouldn't talk to strangers. But even if someone claims to know you still be aware. You never know 100% for sure who the other person is.

I also see that they made recordings of him.
Webcams are nice to be able to see the other person to who you're chatting to. But what you do on cam can be recorded without you knowing it.

Even worse someone could hack your cam. Then without you knowing it they can see you using your cam without you knowing about it.

It's so important to have a good virus scanner and even then be always on your guard.
If your computer is on, but you don't use your cam. Always have something in front of the lens.

And never just download something unless you know for sure that it's safe to download it.

"But what you do on cam can be recorded without you knowing it."

You learn something new every day. I honestly had no idea that web cam use can be recorded...It's not something I've ever done. Only used Skype once when contacting a host family abroad, and we used our web cam for that. Good to know this information, thanks for passing it on syl1985.

Terribly sad. My DC are only 4 and 1, but I am already anxious about their teens. It was rubbish enough being a teenager in the 1980s without personal digital technology.

IrnBruTheNoo · 18/08/2013 09:39

Bike I'm actually quite concerned what the future holds for our generation of teenagers. My two are 6 & 3 and I dread to think how you police the Internet.

This is the downside of the modern world of technology.

With the right parental controls software you can do it; I believe that Windows family safety allows you to block the webcam - I have done it on my daughter's laptop but it was some time ago so I'm not sure how I did it now.

UnknownGnome · 22/08/2013 12:20

I think the current generation of young people are the first to be conducting their lives using technology. My how is that there will be so much education from parents and schools about internet safety that maybe or children won't be as naive? There will always be something to wory about though.

This is a dreadfully sad story. It's 'stranger danger' for a new generation. What used to be a stranger in the park offering to take you to see some kittens is now a username and an avatar encouraging you to do things online.
