I would imagine that her life is smashed beyond repair and that she is in her own hell every day for the rest of her life so it dosn't matter where she is - in prison or at home....

I was stunned when I read it (saw it on the BBC website yesterday). What struck me is that the two girls couldn't have been wearing seatbelts? (flung out of the rear window according to reports)

I agree with sobernow's comments about suicide. I think that if something happened to your child which wasn't your fault you'd be eaten up by "what ifs" and "was there something I could have done?" let alone when it was a direct consequence of your own irresponsible behaviour.

shudder

Hulababy · 10/02/2004 13:55

Not sure if prison is best place for her but then she has to be punished at least for the sake of the other family. Her own life must be hell thinking of what she has done.

Coddy · 10/02/2004 13:56

ditto re seatbelts

I am always amazed at the number of kids not with seatbelts or 4 year old with no booster seats and the seat belt cutting into their necks

easy · 10/02/2004 15:40

he thing is, although I hope I'm NEVER really reckless in the car, know I drive more slowly and with more care when I have passengers.

This woman was just stupid

I feel REALLY sorry for the poor mother who couldn't rescue her 3 dds from a house fire over the weekend. It wasn't her fault, but I'm sure she'll always feel it was. How do you rebuild your life after that?

Paula71 · 10/02/2004 21:03

Surely she has a life sentence in herself due to her stupidity. Doing 80mph on a country road any sensible person would know the consequences.

SofiaAmes · 10/02/2004 22:36

The tv report said that the two girls were NOT wearing seatbelts and they showed a picture of the road which had little hills in it for a long stretch. Wonder why there wasn't a speed camera on that road instead of on the motorway where it's safe to do 70 or 80.
England really needs to make it's seatbelt laws stricter and start enforcing them more.

handlemecarefully · 11/02/2004 09:09

I was furious with the woman since as Sofiaames says, the news report said that the kids were not wearing seat belts. How stupid is that.

Perhaps I should be more empathetic towards her...

Sonnet · 11/02/2004 09:32

Slightly off topic BUT:
I live on a country road with a 40 mph limit - very twisty, pot holes, narrow and hung over by trees in places - and the speed some cars come along it beggers belief. Us and our next door neighbour have been campaigning for spped cameras to visit and ultimatly to reduce the speed to 30mph.
The polices response was that while they agreed it was a dangerous road it was pointless to reduce the speed limit as nobody would do it anyway....had a couple of visits from the safety camera team who ALWAYS catch people but as far as they are concerned it is more profitable for them to sit at the motorway junction and catch all the moterists doing 80mph...
Conclusion: I have no respect for the spped cameras - they have proved they don't reduce accidents ( in our county anyway) - it is just a way to increase income...
rant over

Crunchie · 11/02/2004 11:21

Again slightly off subject but hey, we were discussing this and other crimes in teh office yeaterday and I am sure I read somewhere that in almost all crimes women get longer sentances than men. If a man murders someone they spend less time in jail than if a woman does etc etc And this is true for most types of crimes. I know there are some evil people in this world, but there does seem a culture of lock em up and throw away the key if a woman commits a crime.

And the anomily that exisits with 'white' collar crime. If you commit a crime against government (ie not paying the vat man) you go to jail for far longer than if you spend your saturday nights going out stabbing/beating people up. I heard that 3 men who racially abused, beat up and stabbed a mans puppy got off with being 'bound over to keep the peace' and no fine 'as they have no means to pay it'. These people ar efar more threat to society than Lord Brockett who committed insurance fraud and was snet down for a couple of years!! Bonkers

musica · 11/02/2004 11:44

I could believe that about women, Crunchie - if a woman commits a crime she is seen as being more 'evil' than a man who does the same crime.
