My first baby was born in hospital, highly medicalised ending up with epidural and 150 internal and external stitches. Was under constant threat of csection as DS' heartrate was racing then dropping dramatically with each contraction and newly qualified midwife had done two shifts back to back - resulting in her falling asleep at end of my bed. I was 17yo and frankly terrified.

2nd baby, again in hospital, straight forward quick delivery but still felt out of control - midwife insisting on taking my temp orally whilst in middle of a contraction for example! - but ok.

3rd baby, planned home birth. Fantastic experience, 2 midwives there constantly, I had complete control of situation and felt amazing afterwards.

4th baby, due to his health problems a hospital birth was strongly advised. Left alone for majority of labour, then panic stations over some blood results, cannula placed incase I needed a csection, just lots of interfering (unnecessarily). Then, as I prepared to push, the midwife told me I would poo on DS' head if I remained upright. She insisted I lay down and then proceeded to huff at me when it took 45 mins for me to push him out!

No more babies for me but, if I did ever have another I know which place I would choose to birth in.

I think homebirths are safer.

In hospital there is much more scope for negligence, on account that you can ignore the woman, force her to birth in positions that aren't optimal, use computers and arbitrary timescales as well as undertrained agency staff because should anything go wrong you can press a button and doctors come running, save lives and everyone can sigh that thank god they were in hospital.

I agree with others who said they wanted a home birth because they were worried about having a hosp birth. I was terrified about having a hosp birth due to London's crazy intervention stats and the fact that 1 in 3 have c section (I have heard).

I couldn't be at home because of anaemia but I didn't go in to hosp til I was 7cm and had baby 4 hrs later in pool without gas and air. I wanted to be totally in control.

I would like to have number two at home if I ever get the chance.
