A child's sight damaged by dog sh*t

There's a story in our local newspaper this morning about an eleven year old girl whose sight has been permanently damaged by toxicaria from dog mess left in the street.

I am sick, sick, sick of dodging piles of sh*t in the streets, courtesy of the lazy, selfish @rseholes who don't care enough for other people to clean up after their animals.

I was in a park with ds and a cat did an enormous poo in the middle of it. Cats poo in our garden where ds plays.

Do they poo where they live, or just find somewhere with children to relieve themselves?

I remember when I lived in Leicester one of the local community groups were campaigning on this. They got together one evening and put these little flags out, one for each place a dog had been allowed to s*. It was shocking to see the park and fields covered in these markers, hundreds of them ...

I hate irresponsible dog-owners but I'm pretty sure the responsible ones do as well.

this thread has made me laugh out loud!! I have a few things to add. Firstly my pet hate is when some massive teeth gritted growling and barking dog comes bounding towards me and .. the owner says 'he' a softy.. wouldn't hurt a flea' yeah love, maybe he wouldn't hurt anyone in his own pack but Im not so confident given this is my first and only meeting with him!! (or her for that matter).

I totally take on board though the dog owner perspective about encouraging fear in our children. Ive been really mindful of this as I was proper phobic as a child (more where that came from in a mo) so Im really pround that my kids are confident around dogs and dog loving. I have my MIL to thanks for this as she is a dog owner/dog lover. The children have grown up with her dog and Im so glad that they have had this opportunity as i wouldn't be keen to own a dog myself.

But on serious note all this talk about infections and dogdo reminds me of my younger brother's situation many many years ago. He developed encephalitis (?) as an 18month old which is a bit like menengitis only rarer. He was very seriously ill and suffered lots of problems despite making a remarkable recovery. Anyway all those years ago the docs tract it back to a small cut on his knee that didn't heal properly due to being infected with .. yep you guessed dog mess getting in. The infection then spread to his brain. Hed been playing on the beach and there was dog mess there. My mum understandably became quite neurotic about dog shit and dogs generally. Shes always talked about how little is spoken about the very real health risks associated with dogs fouling where children play. As much as I respect the dogs and the resposnible dog owners, people who don't take this issue serioulsy make my blood boil!!

Lionhearted, in that you are wrong, I never do!

The other day DH and I were comparing dog-park relationship between England and Spain, and in terms of parks, just talking about park use we found something really representative of how much loved are animals in England:

In highly populated areas in Spain, parks have a small fenced enclosure destined for dogs to run and poo in it (a spade to pick the mess is hanging by the poo bin), dogs are not allowed to poo anywhere else in the parks. Here, the ones using the enclosure are the kids and the ones running free around the park and pooing where they fancy are the dogs. Put it that way is a bit shocking, isn't it? Eventhough I own dogs I can't understand why they have to be the priviliged ones to be in the bigger areas.

To be fair Chandra, a great big rottweiler or doberman does need a fair bit more space to exercise than a 2 year old!

But I take your point about the toiletry needs...

Caligula · 28/05/2006 22:50

...2 year old human, of course

Chandra · 28/05/2006 23:19

But as you said a 2 yr old human surely deserves more privileges than a rotwailer or a dobermann regardless of its size?

I wish DS could run around free for a few meters without me yelling "MIND THE POO!!!"

squarer · 28/05/2006 23:45

Chandra, that is a great observation. I will smile (wryly) when I next pass a child pen Grin

Tortington · 29/05/2006 00:16

why was hteh kid p,laying with odog shit?

hunkermunker · 29/05/2006 00:38

Can I just take a moment to add to this thread a brief rant about the inbred fuckwit teenagers who, with great regularity, set fire to the dog-waste bins in our local park, leaving a heap of molten plastic and dog shit around the base of said bin.

These aforementioned wastes of skin need to be made to clean up dog shit with their teeth, IMO.

I am your local nightmaire about dog shit! I have faced local thugs with the shit, I am having to calm down because DH thinks I will be stabbed before long but I am totally gobby about it. I live in Essex where lots of mindless thugs have dogs that they don't really know how to keep. I am absolutely passionate about this!!!! So keep up the good works. We have several people who put their 'wrapped up' do poo in a particular place...... Just wait until I seem em.

The other thing is... there is a big notice on the local park saying no dogs. As some of you may know, I have time on my hands, so am going in there and kicking arse this week, wish me luck!!

essbee · 29/05/2006 02:00

I saw that article too, Greensleeves. I get Angry over dog shit too, I have noticed quite a bit of it around. There is someone who clearly lets their dog poo at the end of our road and we regularly have to step over it on the way to school and back. It really is just disgusting, there isn't any excuse, some dog owners need to start taking a bit more responsibilty.

peanutsmum1 · 29/05/2006 22:28

Well I agree with some of the comments here, especially about SOME irresponsible owners allowing their dogs to crap in childrens play areas - yuck. But have to say cats are just as foul but the worse thing is when I'm digging in MY garden and have to wear gardening gloves as my neighbours let them fucking cats run about crapping in everyone's gardens - charming. Cat shit is dangerous and I have to be careful when my LO is in my OWN garden. Cat owners really tick me off, I hate it when I go to friends houses and there cats are wiping their backsides all over the worktops - YUCK !!!!!!! When challenged in the past cat owners have said but they're wild animals - if they're wild animals and can't be trained, keep them out of my garden, or I won't be held responsible for my actions. Ok rant over.

squarer · 29/05/2006 23:00

Oh and those blinking birds pooing on my washing. I'm out in the garden in my home made hide brandishing a shotgun 24/7. Has it's bonuses too - can spot those danged cat owners literally forcing their cats into my garden for a crap too.

Not bad first post Peanutsmum. Have a little fire and brimstone overflowing did we?

peanutsmum1 · 30/05/2006 21:22

Hi squarer - yes I had some to spare cos I put 4 lots in my online basket when I did my tesco order Grin only meant to order one lot - silly me
