Oh ffs this is the last thing they need.

busybusybee · 13/05/2006 20:57

I heard about these - Horrible idea

compo · 13/05/2006 20:58

don't see that it is much different to a baby einstein dvd or some of the programmes already available over here on satelittle TV aimed at babies. Just because it will be on all day doesn't mean you can't just stick it on for half an hour whilst you make tea and then turn it off

mumfor1standfinaltime · 13/05/2006 20:59

Not much different to what is on now! Agree with compo.

busybusybee · 13/05/2006 21:01

And how exactly does it encourage baby parent interaction Shock
Afaik - Our tv's main purpose is to encourage our los to sit and watch it so I can have some peace :o

No idea why anyone would want a 24 hour channel either Shock

frootyshooty · 13/05/2006 21:21

I think it's brill. I can put it on while |i go to the pub

Isn't this on NTL atm? If it is it's very very boring - too boring for DD (2.5), but then she gets forced to watch scooby doo, power rangers etc by DSs so if used to more exciting programs.

It's a load of pony!!!

WestCountryLass · 13/05/2006 23:11

I like the idea of programs like that for a baby (under 18 months) as some of the programs on CBeebies are a little old for babies like Tweenies, Lazy Town etc and not all babies are up at 6am and 2pm to watch the Teletubbies :)

my nephew is now 2.5 and my SIL puts this on to keep him occupied while she washes up or whatever.
when she first told me about it i was amazed. i thought it was a ridiculous idea and that children of that age shouldn't be shoved in front of a screen. although she only uses it for maybe 10-15 minutes i am sure there are many who will have it on all day so as to not have to entertain their child.

BUT nephew's language has improved i dunno how many %. he is learning new words all the time and he has improved his listening skills. yes i know this could have just been because he is getting older but SIL honestly does beleive its these programmes.
i saw one and itsa very boreing screen with a few simple colours and they just repeat words oevr and over. as i say very boreing to any child that is used to watching power rangers or scooby doo or whatever but perfectly entertaining to a younger child.

I dont think i would be ploking DD in front of the tv (she's 19 months) but i do notice when teh tv is on the music chanels during the daytime she will try and emulate teh dances she see's so maybe there is something to it.

My parents had this for a while - I thought it was crap full of foreign bits that had been badly dubbed my dd(2) didn't seem impressed she would much rather Big cook little cook or Tikabilla

FairyMum · 14/05/2006 08:39

My SIl has just bought a large plasma tv for the bedroom for her little girl. She has the tv on all day in there and is not even 2 years old......

FrannyandZooey · 14/05/2006 09:03

I am horrified by the whole concept, but can certainly see that if parents are going to let their babies watch tv (and I know many do), then this is a better alternative to mainstream tv. Part of the problem with young children watching tv is all the fast cuts and editing that it contains. This is implicated in contributing to ADD. I presume this baby tv channel would have a slower pace and more suitable subject matter - I have seen babies stuck in front of the news before Shock :(
