Gwyneth Paltrow and avoiding carbs for kids - what do you think?

Hi,

You may have read news stories today about Gwynneth Paltrow avoiding carbs for the whole family, including her children aged eight and six:

"Sometimes when my family is not eating pasta, bread or processed grains like white rice, we're left with that specific hunger that comes with avoiding carbs."

We'd be interested to hear what you think about this story.

Does your own diet influence the way you feed your children?

Thanks,

MNHQ

Depends where in India you're from. Northerners eat more roti. Southeners eat more rice.

But definitely one or the other. And in some south East Asian cuisines the rice (white, obviously) is the whole point.

We had M&S pizza for tea. Bleeding power was off all day and it was quick. As was the pile of lambs lettuce and thinly sliced cucumber, drizzled with balsamic that we had on the side.

"I wonder how and why you would have curry without the rice-surely one needs the other?" You can have something called cauliflower "rice", it's basically cauliflower grated to the size of a rice grain and steamed - works really well. Otherwise we'd have steamed broccoli or steamed shredded cabbage. Or you could make a dry curry to go with a wet one.

Must admit I'm not to keen on xenia's menu but Bonsoir's sounds pretty dull too. I had Jerk Chicken this evening with roast veg...it was lush, maybe not to everyone's taste, but who cares. We live by the 80:20 rule - at least 80% of our meals are low carb. Off out on Friday night to an excellent local Italian, will have pumpkin ravioli - it's one of my favourite pastas. No need to be 100% rigid, you can low carb and eat planned cheats, especially if you have no weight to lose.

I never have rice with a curry and don't see the need for it at all. If there's a lot of sauce - use a spoon!

My favourite is either a jalfrezi or a vindaloo, and a side of spinach or cauliflower bhaji.

I never eat rice with curry- I usually have some tarka daal instead. Sloppy as well, but a spoon does the trick.
