just heard this on radio 4. It's the same nursery where 3 members of staff were prosecuted for child cruelty. Can't find any further info though, those are the only details I heard. It's in Cambridgeshire and called something like Addenbrook Nursery. Couldn't believe my ears Sad

shellybelly · 20/04/2006 13:20

OMG! That's awful Sad

Pennies · 20/04/2006 13:27

Surely all nursery staff are trained in how to dislodge food when a child is choking??

Tutter · 20/04/2006 13:27

a 3yr old choked to death at a nursery near here too - just before xmas Sad

nailpolish · 20/04/2006 13:33

\link{http://www.justlearning.co.uk/\i went to have a peek at their website and its shut down}

mykidsmum · 20/04/2006 13:33

Pennies, I have tried to administer first aid to someone who was choking before, and sadly he died, i was trained and had been successful in the past, its not as simple as just disloding it.
Sad

nailpolish · 20/04/2006 13:35

Sad that must have been very worrying and sad for you mykidsmum

nailpolish · 20/04/2006 13:36

mykidsmum, i agree its not easy

Pennies · 20/04/2006 13:37

Fair enough - I went on a first aid for kids course last year and the bloke running the course gave the impression that it wasn't that hard.

Mykidsmum - how awful for you BTW.

Scary stuff.

Blackduck · 20/04/2006 13:41

10 year old died choking on a drawing pin despite paramedics etc....so guess it isn't that easy...

ntt · 20/04/2006 13:44

Mykidsmum, how horrible for you. Sometimes I suppose there's just nothing anyone can do. I was shocked that it happened at a nursery that had been in trouble with child cruelty.

This is so terrible. I am so sorry for everyone involved, the child, the parents, the carers at the nursery, the other children at the nursery :(.

we were eating in a restaurant once, and this waiter who thought my dd1 (then 2yo) was cute and offered her one of those egg shaped mints!! He didn't ask me and she popped it in her mouth. We didn't realise till she started choking and turing purple, but luckily it came back out .. the waiter was very apologetic and had such a sorry face ... but still

spacecadet · 20/04/2006 14:40

a patient on my ward chocked to death, it was when i worked in mental health, he had a form of dememtia and had to be watched while he ate as he tended to hamster food.
he chocked on a bread roll in front of the frightened patients, every attempt was made to dislodge the food, i tried to resusitate him to no availSad

Spagblog · 20/04/2006 14:47

Chilling. My DD went to a Just Learning Nursery. We loved it, but heard that the turn over of staff was very high within the chain of nurseries

expatinscotland · 20/04/2006 14:50

how incredibly tragic! that poor baby and family. it's every parent's nightmare.

choking can happen at any age, to anyone.

waterfalls · 20/04/2006 14:53

I was told in a first aid course, that is the lodged object will not come out, and if the patient is starting to lose conciousness (through lack of oxygen) then as a last resort, to put your mouth to their, holding their nose, and blow as hard as you can, that obviously means the object will go into their lung and probably damage it for life as well as being very painful, but will save their live.

welshmum · 20/04/2006 15:04

I think the charges against those accused of cruelty were later dropped.

hulababy · 20/04/2006 18:40

So sad. My heart goes out to that family, and all those who knew the baby :(

ntt · 20/04/2006 19:04

Yes the charges were dropped - it wasn't clear on the initial report I heard

we have a just learning nursery here which i tried dd out in...it was awful, staff were so impatient and off hand, one child was sick and it was left by other staff up until we left after visit, books and toys were ripped broken and dirty..and too many 'work experience' where there should have been qualified staff imo and yes, ive just completed my C.M training and had to do 5 weeks of first aid, so im sure nursery staff have to comply too.

terrible acccident, but IME of nursery very bad news

EvesMama · 20/04/2006 19:14

little girl died close to here last week, was playing with a pin from notice board and no attempt to remove workedSad..im assu ming it had punctured somewhere, but a piece of apple like someone said earlier, should have been dislodgedSad

FairyMum · 20/04/2006 19:17

Choking is my greatest fear. I didn't let my 10 month old have pieces of apples at that age. I'd grate the apple. Grapes is another hazard. Obviously you cannot feed them soup and mash until their teens, but I think you should be a bit careful.
